GENERAL SPECIFICATION : PAINTING WORK

1. PAINTING GENERALi) Unless otherwise state ready-mixed oil based priming undercoating and finishing paints shall

be used for all steelworks and woodwork. For internal plaster work, water based emulsionpaint shall be used. For external plaster work, cement based paint shall be used.

ii) The Contractor must ensure application of paint shall adhere strictly to the recommendationand specification of the manufacturer.

iii) All paints shall be of the same quality, obtained from approved manufacturers and a sampleof each paint shall be submitted for approval by the Engineer before paints are ordered.

2. APPLICATION GENERALi) The Contractor must ensure that the paint is thoroughly mixed so that all the pigment is in

suspension and that paint is of suitable consistency before the material is used. No oil orthinners shall be added.

ii) Paint shall be applied only to surfaces that are thoroughly dry and free from grease and oiland shall be applied immediately after surface preparation.

3. APPLICATION AND DRYINGi) The paint shall be applied by brush to give a smooth even coat.ii) One coat shall be allowed to dry sufficiently before the next coat is applied. Primed or

undercoated work shall be left for a long period before completing the painting process.iii) For painting done in several coats, each coat shall be of different shade of colour from the

order directed by the Engineer.

4. TREATMENT OF CONTACT SURFACESFor assemblies which have to be fabricated by riveting, bolting or other mechanical methods, thecontact surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned and painted immediately before assembly and jointing.

5. PAINTING METALWORKi) Non-adherent mill scale shall be removed by hand chipping or mechanical cleaning with

power operated tools. The surface shall then be wire-brushed to remove rust and all disintegrated scale. The surface shall be thoroughly dry and degreased before application ofpaint.

ii) At the place of manufacture, whether at factory or on site, one coat of chromate metal primershall be applied. So far as is practicable, the painted steel work shall not be handled or stackeduntil the paint is thoroughly dry and sufficiently hard to avoid being damaged. After erectionwhere the top coat have been damaged, rust, if any, shall be cleaned off with a power drivenwire brush and the area repainted with a similar paint.

iii) After erection the primer shall be followed by one undercoat and two coats of high glossfinishing paint for interior or exterior use whichever is applicable.

6. PAINTING TO PIPES AND FITTINGSi) All exposed and uninsulated pipes and fittings, except those in copper or bronze, shall be

twice coated with approved gloss paint or ICI manufacture or similar approved of selectedcolours in addition to one of chromate metal primer.

ii) Galvanized surface shall first be treated with one coat of Calcium Plumbate Primer followedby one application of undercoat and one application of gloss finishing coat of selected colours.

iii) Steel sheet wrapping for pipes shall be painted with one coat of lead paint and one finishingcoat of aluminium paint.

iv) All surfaces shall be adequately cleaned, prepared, inspected and to the satisfaction of theEngineer and shall be dry prior to being painted.

v) All buried pipes shall be thrice coated with bituminous paint.

7. PAINTING STEEL COVERSChequered plates and open grid covers for trenches and pits shall be given on oil based priming coatand two finishing coats of chlorinated rubber paint.

8. PAINTING STERILISERSThe external body shall be cleaned of all rust, dirt, etc. and then given one priming coat followed byanother one coat of Apexior paint of suitable grade for hot external surface. The internal body of thesteriliser must be cleaned of all rust, dirt and given two coats of Apexior paint suitable for hot and wetsurface.

9. PAINTING FOR WOODWORK (IF APPLICABLE)Surface woodwork are to be prepared for decoration as follows:-i) All dirt, grease, etc. is to be cleaned off.ii) Surface is to be rubbed down with glass paper to remove all projecting fibres, particular

attention being paid to mouldings. All dust is to be removed.

For woodwork to be paint (not varnished or polished) the following additional treatment is required:-iii) All knots and resin pockets are to be scraped and given two thin coats of patent knotting

consisting of shellac dissolved in methylated spirits, free from resin.iv) After priming all cracks, nail holes, open joints and other imperfections are to be made good

with hard stopping consisting of paste white lead and gold size stiffened with whiting.Linseed oil putty is not to be used.

10. PAINTING FOR SEALERS AND PRIMERS (IF APPLICABLE)All surfaces to be oil painted are to be treated with the appropriate sealer or primer as follows:-i) Plastered, rendered, concrete, brick, asbestos cement and similar surfaces : apply one coat of

alkali-resisting primer.

ii) Hardboard, fibreboard, etc. : apply one coat of plaster primer.

iii) Plastic surfaces : each with abrasive paper and white spirit.

iv) Steel and iron surfaces : apply one coat of red lead primer or zinc chromate primer. Edges are tobe primed first and allowed to dry and then the whole surface primed.

v) Galvanized or zinc surface ; either apply one coat of calcium plumbate primer or etch withpropriety solution and apply one coat of zinc chromate primer, etching solution is to be keptaway from plaster and to be well washed off and the metal dried before priming.

vi) Copper, aluminium and lead surfaces : etch with abrasive paper and white spirit.

vii) Coated soil pipes, etc. : apply one coat of aluminium primer.

viii) Woodwork : apply one coat of aluminium primer or, in the case of coarse grain timber, one coatof white-lead based primer thinned 10 percent with white spirit. Two coats of primer are to beapplied to end-grain surfaces.

11. GENERAL PAINTINGi) Priming Joinery

All joinery to be painted is to primed before delivery to the site or in the case of joineryprepared on site, as soon as possible after preparation. Surfaces subsequently cut or damagedare to be reprimed.

All hidden faces of joinery including the back of boarding, frames, skirting, architrave, etc.and bottom edges of doors are to be primed before fixing. Approved clear wood preservativeis to be used instead, where adjacent faces have polished or natural finish.

ii) Priming MetalworkAll steel and ironwork to be painted except plumbing pipe work and electrical conduit is to beprimed before assembly or fixing, including laps, ends for building and other concealed parts.

iii) Nail Head In wall Lining, etc.Head of nails or pins in hardboard, fibreboard and similar linings to be distempered oremulsion painted to be spotted with one coat of primer and one undercoat of oil paint beforethe lining is decorated.

iv) VarnishingWoodwork is to be prepared for varnishing as described above, particular attention beingpaid to cleanliness of the timber. Polish is to be of an approved propriety wax polish, appliedin two coats, each coat well worked in and polished.

v) Wax PolishingWoodwork is to be prepared for wax polishing as described above, particular attention beingpaid to cleanliness of the timber. Polish is to be of an approved propriety wax polish, appliedin two coats, each coat well worked in and polished.

vi) Wood PreservativeAll unexposed timbers are deemed to be treated with approved wood preservative.

12. SURFACE PREPARATION FOR PLASTERPlastered, rendered, concrete, brick and similar surfaces are to be prepared for decoration as follows:-

i) Cracks and other imperfections are to be pointed or cut out and made good.ii) Surface is to allowed to dry out for as long as possible and in no case less than 7 days for

distempers, cement paints and plastic emulsion paints or less than one month for oil paints.iii) Any efflorescence is to be removed by dry brushing followed by a damp cloth. This is to be

repeated until no further efflorescence appears within 48 hours.iv) Surface is to be rubbed down to remove all plaster nibs and other irregularities and brushed

down to remove dusts.

For surfaces to be finished with cement paint, surface is to be well wetted immediately before thefinishes is applied and allowed to dry partially until it no longer shines.

13. FINISHED QUALITYAll finished paint work and decoration is to be of uniform finish and colour, free from blemished,brush marks and tackiness. Edges of paint work are to be accurately cut in to line and disfigurementof adjacent surfaces to be avoided. Painting of sashes, etc. glazed with putty is to overlap the puttyonto the glass, to finish exactly on the sight one of the rebate. All bolts, handles and other surfaceironmongery and all cover plates and removable fittings, are to be removed before painting ordecoration is carried out and subsequently replaced.
