REMOVAL

1. Remove the V-belt, water pump pulley and alternator.

(Refer to the “TIMING BELT” section.)2. Drain the engine coolant by removing the water pump

drain plug.

3. Remove the timing belt.(Refer to the “TIMING BELT” section.)

4. Remove the camshaft timing belt pulley, using the SST toprevent the turning of the camshaft.

SST: 09504-87501-000

5. Remove the ignition coil from the cylinder head cover.

6. Disconnect the vacuum hoses that are connected to theintake manifold and cylinder head cover.

7. Remove the surge tank stay from the cylinder headcover.

8. Remove the cylinder head cover attaching bolts in thesequence as indicated in the right figure. Remove thecylinder head cover from the cylinder head.

9. Removal of camshaft bearing cap No. 1 and camshaftbearing cap No. 2.(1) Using the hexagonal section of the camshaft No. 2,

set the mating marks of the camshaft gear sections tothe relationship as indicated in the right figure.

INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT OF

BRAKE PEDAL

1. Brake pedal height check(1) Check the pedal height.

Specified ValueRHD MT:

MT: 148.0 ± 5 mmAT: 149.8 ± 5 mm

LHDMT: 143.7 ± 5 mmAT: 148.4 ± 5 mm

2. Pedal height adjustment(1) Disconnect the connector of the stop lamp switch.

(2) Remove the stop lamp switch by loosening the locknut1.

(3) Loosen the lock nut 2. Adjust the pedal height byturning the push rod3.

(4) Tighten the lock nut of the push rod.

Tightening Torque: 22.6 - 28.4 N·m

(5) Screw-in the stop lamp switch, until it comes in contactlightly with the pedal stopper.

(6) Adjust the clearance between the pedal stopper and theedge surface at the screw section of the stop lampswitch to 1.5 mm.

(7) Tighten the lock nut of the stop lamp switch.Tightening Torque: 19.4 - 31.6 N·m

(8) Connect the connector of the stop lamp switch. Ensurethat the stop lamp goes on.

3. Pedal free travel check(1) After stopping the engine, depress the brake pedal

several times so that no negative pressure may re-main in the booster.

(2) Lightly push the pedal by your hand. Measure thedistance (free travel) up to a point where you feel aresistance from the pedal.

Specified Value: 0.5 - 3.0 mm

4. Pedal free travel adjustment(1) Loosen the lock nut1.(2) Adjust the free travel to 0.5 - 3.0 mm by turning the

push rod2.(3) Tighten the lock nut.

Tightening Torque: 22.6 - 28.4 N·m

(4) Ensure that the stop lamp goes on properly.
