Brief note of the state of trade unions, including extend of unionization, number ofnational centers, structure and organisation of trade unions, main challenges facing
the trade union movement.
Trade union density in Malaysia is considered low. The decline in density is due to severalfactors (i.e. lowered worker interest, more ro!emloyer legal environment, toughereconomic environment and growth of human resource management".

/lthough, the number of unions has been steadily increasing but Malaysian unions aregenerally small ! mostly are newly registered unions are in!house unions because by the#$-%s, a national union already existed in each of the ma1or industries in the country2fragmented i.e. based on trades, occuations, industries and establishments and regionali.e. 0eninsular Malaysia, 3abah and 3arawak. This is due to the strict re4uirements of the
Trade 5nion /ct #$&$.

The Malaysian Trade 5nion 6ongress (MT56" and the 6ongress of 5nions of 7mloyees inThe 0ublic and 6ivil 3ervices (6570/63" have both been recognised as national trade unioncenters (T56" by the Malaysian 8overnment.
MTU" is registered in #$&% as a society underthe 3ocieties /ct #$)). Membershi of MT56 isavailable to any emloyee union whether in theublic sector or in the rivate sector.

3tructure of national unions in Malaysia is as follow !
