Islamic Etiquette of Drinking

Introduction:

Drink is one of the most important mercies of Allah. We can live without food, but we can notlive without water. Allah indicated to this reality in the Qur'an:

Allah reminded the human beinFs of this mercy in many places of the Qur'an alonFwith their respective miracles:

?) Do not drink while standinF up, but drink while sittinF because that is healthier and more befittinF as a Food manner. —he oly ~rophet used to drink while sittinF. —his way washis usual Fuidance. esides, he said:

}t was true that he prohibited a person to drink while standinF and in fact he ordered thestandinF drinker to vomit this water as he drank it while standinF up. Œne Froup of people hasstated that this order was gust to Fuide people and to adopt the best option. DrinkinF Ÿam Ÿamwater is permissible while standinF up as the oly ~rophet did because this is a case of necessity.

 prohibited us from drawinF water with the hands, sayinF: •Do not lick the water like adoF and do not taste the water at niFht before eamininF it out of fear that the recipient iscovered durinF the niFht.•

}f a person drinks by the mouth while standinF up from an elevated basin, there would be nodifference between drinkinF with the hand or by the mouth, because drinkinF with the mouthis very danFerous if the drinker is lyinF faced down on his venture.

O) efraininF from drinkinF directly from the waterskin: Allah¥s essenFer saas) said: Donot drink directly from the waterskin or the guF.”

—he health benefits behind this are obvious. A person cannot see what is inside the waterskin.—here miFht be somethinF harmful inside. “ikewise, if a person drinks from it, his saliva

could Fet into the water and harm others. oreover, this manner of drinkinF is simplydistasteful.
