____________________________________________________________________

Has been successfully developing the Middle Eastern Studies Program since 2004 raising Arabic enrollment to over 700 per academic year consistently (and almost 800 in

one academic year 2012) – the majority of these students take Arabic as elective in addition to our Minor and Certificate students.

Created the Minor in Arabic Studies program that has been successfully taught since the academic year 2010.-2011. Developed and put an Academic Plan in 2012 for a

Major in Arabic Studies currently in progress. --

Founded the Council for Arabic and Islamic Studies for cross-cultural understanding between the Arab and Western Worlds in research and teaching. Pending fund-raising and applications submitted, the Council has rich programs ahead to realize its mission and objectives. Council’s Mission: To acknowledge the significant contributions of Arabic Studies and Islamic civilization and cultures to the world at large both historically and in the modern age. The Council’s research and teaching programs seek to promote multiculturalism, diversity, inter-faith dialogue, cross-cultural understanding, and the expansion of human civilization and cultures through Arabic as well as other Middle-Eastern languages including Persian and Turkish. The Council seeks to develop constructive academic and cultural interaction and partnerships between ASU and similar groups in the Arab and Muslim worlds. https://cais.asu.edu/

--Worked closely with Middle East Studies Faculty and colleagues in Hebrew and Persian to develop Middle Eastern Studies; cooperated closely with Hebrew colleagues to develop and introduce online Hebrew courses in culture and Literature that have been successfully taught by them since 2011; worked cooperatively with Hebrew Faculty and colleagues who developed and put an Academic Plan for a Certificate in Modern Hebrew Studies in 2011; working cooperatively with Persian faculty working to put a plan for a Certificate in Persian Studies in the near future (this has been severely handicapped by the fact that for the past 8 years or so our only Instructor for Persian has been PARTIME despite numerous requests to appoint a FULTIME Lecturer for this Critical Language that is as important as Korean given the threat both countries pose. Worked diligently with CLI to resume Turkish in our program. We currently have a Fulbright FLTA teaching Turkish in SILC 2013-14.

Certificate and Minor in Arabic Studies

Continued Work on the Arabic Studies Certificate. Created the successful Program of the Certificate in Arabic Studies in 2006-7; consisting of 18 credit hours of exclusively upper division (300+ courses. Almost 60 students graduated with the Certificate since it was launched; about 15 more students are currently enrolled (fall 2013) working on it. ASU students in the liberal arts, humanities, and social sciences seeking academic or professional careers in any of the three disciplines or thematic concentrations have been attracted to this Certificate because of the added advantage the program gives them in the job

26

Page 27: Dr. Souad T. Ali - C.V. 2015 - ASU Linkedin

market given the demonstrably high need for graduates with Arabic knowledge and Middle Eastern knowledge. A Minor in Arabic Studies was successfully added in 2010-11 and currently we are working on the approved academic plan to establish a Major in Arabic Studies.

Persian and Turkish Studies

Created the Persian (Farsi) Program and Turkish Programs that are now taught in their elementary and intermediate, or elementary level, respectively, in SILC. In Fall 2009 the first Advanced Persian (Farsi) class was successfully introduced completing the sequence of 101 through to 301. The programs have been hampered by the lack of full time faculty members. While Persian has been successfully taught for the past three years by a dedicated FA that we hope to promote to a lecturer, we were forced to stop offering Turkish that was taught by a Ph.D. student who could not maintain teaching it given her graduate work responsibilities. We hope to have full time faculty to expand these critical languages and important programs.

Cooperation with Osborn Elementary School District and Central High SchoolTo Develop Arabic Studies Program

Our Arabic program has been invited by the Osborn School District to join their application for the 5 year Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant for Local Education Administrations and Institutes of Higher Education. Accordingly, I have worked with the Director of SILC, Arabic and Chinese Faculty on a Partnership program between SILC and Arizona Osborn Elementary School District, Central High School of Phoenix Union High School District to develop a Mandarin and an Arabic language studies program. The intent of the grant is to implement programs which will facilitate foreign language fluency by college graduation. While Central High has a Mandarin program, they don’t yet have an Arabic program. Osborn has neither. The ultimate objective of this significant project is to improve services to the students and families residing in the greater Phoenix area.

The Nora Risha Scholarship Funds

Led efforts in 2008-2009, in cooperation with the Risha Family (in honor of their beloved daughter Nora who died in a tragic car accident in Phoenix), CLAS and SILC, that have

resulted in the establishment of the Nora Risha Funds in SILC and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for the development of Arabic Studies and the creation of an

Arabic Scholarship Program

SELECT INVITED LECTURES AND PRESENTATIONS

Continued contributing several invited Lectures, panels, symposia, Lectures, Radio and TV interviews on the turmoil and developments in the Middle East, the Arab Spring, and related issues to Islam and the Arab World.
