I am glad to announce that the remedial work on the
swimming pool timber deck has fi nally been completed and has been re-opened to our Members. We are still in the
midst of completing the rock revetment to the swimming
pool for wave protection and, barring any unforeseen
circumstances, we should complete the same by this
year end in accordance with the approval granted by
Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran dated 24th November 2017.
Those Members entering the Club at the Tower Block will
have noticed that it is now a prerequisite to scan their
Membership card in order to gain access to the Club
premises. Understandably, as with any change, we have
received contrasting feedback and comments, but I am
glad to note that most are positive in nature. The same
was true when we started the numbering system for our
Club towels, but since implementation of said change we
have successfully accounted for every single towel, hence,
putting a halt to the alarming number of missing towels
every month. Therefore, I strongly urge Members to lend
their support to this security initiative as the Committee
Lim Shin LidPresident
and Management continue to enhance our Club’s safety and
security features for the ultimate benefi t of all Members.
We are also in the process of reviewing our Club Rules
and working towards calling an Extraordinary General
Meeting to propose the necessary resolutions for Members’
due consideration and approval. An early 2019 date is
being targeted for this Extraordinary General Meeting.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a
Happy Deepavali and a Merry Christmas! As we approach
the end of 2018, I also want to wish everyone a very Happy
New Year 2019!
"Therefore, I strongly urge Members to lend their support to this security initiative as the Committee and Management continue to enhance our Club’s safety and security features..."

Lim Khoon Seng Editor
We look forward to building an even stronger Team in the coming year and beyond.
“ “
Time passes and we would soon be bidding goodbye to the
Year 2018 and welcoming the arrival of 2019. On behalf of the
Editorial Board, I would like to wish all our fellow members
and families,
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
This has been a great year for the Club, especially from
the development point of view. Some long standing issues
have been put to rest or at least for many years to come;
among which are the potentially “high risk” slope next to the
Seafront Café, and the associated ponding problem, which
fortunately has now been addressed, the Rock Revetment of
the sea fronting shore line along the length of the Swimming
pool and Club house, and also the boat Launching Ramp at
the Boat Yard.
Our Club, being sea-fronting, has given us a strategic and
beautiful view of the sea and the North Channel, but the
location has also opened the buildings and structures at time
to the tremendous forces of nature. This latest effort would
likely give our Club a lasting solution to the problem for many
years to come.
The Club has seen more active patronage this year by members
and some very successful events being held. This is a healthy
improvement, and we look forward to the continuing trend
to having members’ active participation and making better
use of our Club facilities, especially among the younger
members.
It would not be complete without mentioning the
enhancement of the Club Management Team this year,
starting with the engagement and confi rmation of our GM, Ramis Chandran. Ramis has proven his diligence and
leadership as head of the Team, of the many improvements
made, and projects completed over the year, which would
not have been possible without his active leadership. In
no small measure, this has also permitted the Committee
space to look into the Review of Club Rules and By-Laws,
and the Review and Documentation of the SOPs’. We look
forward to building an even stronger Team in the coming
year and beyond.
See you in the Club.
EDITOR'SNOTE
GMʼSMESSAGE
| 05
Dear Members,
Firstly I would like to thank the Club President for his kind
words when recently announcing my confi rmation as GM for Penang Swimming Club. I also want to thank all those
Members who have offered congratulations and encouraging
words and advice following said confi rmation. I am indeed proud to be part of the PSC Management Team, where, in
my short tenure, I have already established relationships and
fi rm ties with so many.
Recently, there has been much activity within the Club, and
will be so in the near future. To everyone's relief, we have
also fi nally completed the swimming pool area construction and timber decking. The remaining outstanding matter is the
minor problem of the procurement of suitable sun-loungers
and umbrellas, which is being determined in conjunction with
the Club Maintenance Sub-Committee.
Future activity will of course be partially surround the
upcoming festive Christmas and New Year period. As F&B
business continues to pick up, all those involved from the
F&B Committee to serving and bar staff, are working towards
providing the best value, choice and service, with planning
for the festive period coming under particular scrutiny.
Members may have noticed that we have recently added
to the ranks, in the Captain’s Restaurant, 'Supervisor' Jacky
Hong.
Onto the Christmas & New plan! To provide great food,
quality and variety, combined with effi cient catering and bar
service. With particular reference to the New Year Countdown,
plans are underway for a fun and thrill-fi lled evening not to be missed. So make a date to celebrate the coming of 2019 with
your fellow PSC Members.
On a more serious note - Club security is an ongoing issue and
a constant 'headache'. All Members should appreciate the
security measures that are put in place for Member's benefi t, safety and security. So Members, please be vigilant and
observant of the Club Rules, so that all can enjoy a secure and
risk-free environment within the Club. I recognize that every
Member's experience is fundamental in determining the
health and strength of a club. Members should enjoy every
aspect of a club into which they invest time, money and often
talent. In that respect, management welcomes feedback
from Members both positive and when necessary, critical. In
the near future, we will be conducting a survey requesting
Members' comments.
Survey Objectives
To measure Members’ satisfaction regarding facilities
& services.
To solicit Members’ suggestions regarding areas of
potential improvement.
To endeavour a 'baseline' establishment regarding
Members’ perception of general membership manners
and behaviour.
When received, please take time to complete the “Members'
Satisfaction” survey. Members' opinions are important in
helping move the Club forward.
Finally, as we look forward to a grand fi nale to 2018 and the transition into a new year, let’s plan for a new era for PSC,
aiming at further progress in our quest to be regarded as
'Penang’s Premier Club'.
Regards

PSC’s Beach Carnival, an event fi lled with fun and joy for all club members and their children, was held on 31st August
2018. There was a wide range of activities available for
all participants; making this event a truly family-oriented
Carnival.
The activities commenced with the children's Kayak Race,
followed by Standing Upper Paddle (SUP) tryouts by
those who were more on the adventurous side. Thereafter,
participants had a good time enjoying the specially

commissioned boat rides and taking in the spectacular
sunset views. The ‘Tug-of-War’ event was well-appreciated
by onlookers for the sportsmanship and fellowship shown
by the participants.
At 7pm, the buffet food sections commenced service much
to the delight of all present, who were quite hungry after
the ‘heavy workout’ on the beach. While the adults enjoyed
their buffet spread, the children indulged in the specially
prepared kid’s menu with foods such as chicken nuggets,
sandwiches, fi sh fi ngers, French fries and the “Merdeka” cake.
While dinner was served, members were entertained by
3-member strolling guitarists – ‘The Strollers’. Thereafter,
members from our very own Aerobic Group performed some
interesting Aerobics routines. Next on the programme was
the presentation of prizes by our Club President to winners
of the Kayak Race and Tug-of-War event.
Our Beach Carnival ended around 9.45pm following a
20-minute fi re juggling performance and after the bonfi re had gradually abated.

The Mid-Autumn and Lantern Festival Celebration was held
on 22nd September 2018 at the Multi-Purpose Hall at Level

Ariff offi ciated the event.
The band 'Peak of the Jammed' entertained members and
their children with some Chinese and English songs while
dinner was served. In addition, all were treated to various
varieties of Mooncakes and biscuits. The children participated
in a few games such as 'Watermelon Eating' and 'Banana'
competition led by the Club Executive.
The event came to an end at 9.20pm and the 120 attendees
departed with fond memories of the 2018 Mid-Autumn and

Just after sunset on October 13, 2018 - the Clubhouse was
packed with members and guests anticipating the ‘kick off’
of another enjoyable Oktoberfest. At around 8.00pm our
Club President, Mr Lim Shin Lid, welcomed the attendees to
an evening of merriment and fellowship.
Play Guitars Studios, a popular band featuring a keyboardist,
one guitarist, a drummer and two singers mesmerised the
crowd right from their fi rst note. The appreciative crowd danced and swayed to the stream of energetic and pulsating
numbers belted out by the band.
| 14
Club Happenings
Enriched by the last Oktoberfest experience, the Management
put in place 4 stations to facilitate placement and payment of
orders and collection of drinks. In addition, 5 food stations
were also set up - resulting in a smooth fl ow of orders and effi cient delivery of food and drinks. Members were treated to the availability of a wider food selection comprising Chicken
Drumsticks and Pies, Potato/Green Salads, Roasted Beef/Lamb
mains, Sauerkrauts and Karnapche/Kebapche Sausages to
accompany their drinks of choice: Calsbergs, Tigers, Somersbys,
Erdingers, Wines and Whiskies, etc.
In between Band breaks, besides catching up with
friends and taking snapshots, attendees participated in
party games like beer drinking and mug holding. There
were 36 lucky winners from the party games and they
were each rewarded with a gift.
After the event drew to a close, quite a number of our
members who were still in the partying mood adjourned
to the Fun Pub or Pacifi c Lounge for another round of merriment.

It is an interesting feature among the Anglers that during our
fi shing competitions, each Angler has his favorite location. For example, if you wish to look for Mr. Ung Seang Guan and
his family, you would intuitively know where to look for them.
Yet no Angler will abuse this unwritten provision as none of
the Anglers will take for granted in assuming that the spot is
automatically reserved but will dutifully come early to “jom”
their selective spot.
And so it was when the Anglers gathered on the morning of
August 26, 2018 for their 4th fi shing competition for the year 2018/2019.

Dark clouds and intermittent rain from the morning eventually
broke into a storm when the Angling Members gathered at
the Marina Deck on the evening of 15 Sept 2018.
It was our 2nd Social Gathering and it was a time when the
Anglers leave their fi shing paraphernalia at home and just
SOCIALGATHERING
be present to enjoy each others’ company and to exchange
light banter.
However, the Marina Deck was defenseless against the heavy
pelting of the rain and the battering of the strong winds;
wetting many of us already seated at our tables. Promptly
& working in unison, we shifted our dining tables away from
the onslaught of the strong winds, spraying water onto the
dinner spread as well. We even had to wait awhile for the
wind and rain to abate before queuing again for the buffet
spread.
Obviously, the Members were unperturbed by the furious
side of Mother Nature and it was most encouraging to see
that they remained cheerful and accommodating in spite of
the inclement weather and the not so ideal location.
The Members were treated to a simple delectable buffet and
the Club karaoke set to entertain us for the evening.
The fi rst inter-club sailing race took place on the weekend of August 18 and 19. Participants came from the Penang
Water Sports and Recreation Center and the Bagan Ajam
sailing club. The sailing section members nabbed a total
of 4 medals, of whom includes River (Optimist Girls), Scott
Ong (Laser), Geh Chow Lin (Windsurfi ng) and Yeoh Lai Hoon (Windsurfi ng).

The Sailing section is in the process of refurbishing a

The Annual Scuba Carnival held on 9 Sept 2018 was a fun-fi lled day at the poolside with fi ne weather. Members including kids were thrilled to experience the feeling of underwater

The day’s activities included trial dive, introduction to
snorkeling for all, underwater treasure hunt and a game
of octopus “underwater hockey”. The Club instructors,
led by Mr. Danny Lim were enthusiastic in introducing the
newcomers to the underwater sport.
Prizes were given to the winning kids snorkel teams and

Carnival ended with lunch for all participants and scuba
members.
The Section will conduct a Snorkel Dive Course open to all

Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) XIX Perak was held from 12 to
22 September 2018. We are proud to have 6 of our PSC
swimmers qualifi ed and swam for Penang in this prestigious biannually competition. They are Elynn Tan, Toh Ting Wei,
Chris Chew, Cieran Wong, Law Hong Bin and Jesselyn
Lim. This is the most highly regarded national game for
any competitive swimmers to compete in. Our head coach
Tan Choo Heng was selected as the Penang State SUKMA
swimming coach. Elynn Tan single handedly won 5 individual
gold medals for Penang. We are very proud of her fantastic
achievement despite the jetlag (she arrived Ipoh 1 day
before competition from USA).
Special thanks also to our dedicated and experienced
coaches Coach Liu Qing Ru, Coach Lim Boon Lee and
Coach Tan Choo Heng for all the guidance and well-planned
trainings. A note of thank you and congratulations to the
proud parents for all their support and dedication towards
Elynn’s swimming all these years. This is the result of hard
work and perseverance from the swimmers, coaches and
family members. Well done everyone! We hope this will
motivate other swimmers to continue to strive for better
timing and results.

It has been a hectic month for the PSC Aerobics Group, as
classes and workshops have been in full swing. Classes are
well attended and whenever possible, we also invite guest
Instructors to conduct the sessions as a way to add more fun
and to jazz up the classes.
Recently we held a Pilates Workshop, and the workout
incorporates using the rattan pole. The pole is not only used
for dancing but for fl oor work as well - it helps to strengthen core muscles and enhances overall body toning. Every month,
we conduct Pilates workshops using different tools; do
come and join these workshops to experience the benefi ts for yourself.
We have also recently initiated the process of acquiring gym
balls aka Swiss balls, as we intend to introduce a new routine

to our Pilates Classes. Previously used by physiotherapists,
the gym ball is now utilised by health clubs across the world.
We do not want our members to miss out on this effective
fi tness and toning equipment. This has become possible thanks to the Main Committee for approving storage space
for the balls. A Gym Ball Workshop will be held in October
and will be open to all PSC members. As there will initially be
a limited number of balls, members would be wise to register
for this event early.
Once again, the Line Dance Team of Dance Sport Group put
their heads together to organise the Annual Inter-Club Line
Dance Jam, where participants from 4 Clubs journeyed near
and far to lend us their wholehearted support.
The Singapore Recreation Club, Ali Dancers of Medan,
Taiping Chinese Recreation Club and Penang Chinese
Recreation Club were joined by various groups from the Line
Dance Community in Penang and Butterworth to make this
highly anticipated event an astounding success.
The Multi-Purpose Hall was vividly festooned and bedecked
to the fl oral theme, lending a very vibrant and festive atmosphere. Such was the overwhelming responses from
participants this year, that the hall was fi lled to the rafters with the energetic and exuberant crowd.
Kudos to the organisers Emmeline Yong, Teresa Chin, Pat Ooi,
Josephine Cheang and Chin Le Na; who worked tirelessly to
ensure everything went smoothly for everyone to enjoy a
marvellous time.
The event started off at 4pm, with coffee, tea and a delectable
spread of nyonya kueh served to provide some sustenance
before the serious business of dancing began. When the
music started, all 220 dancers enthusiastically took to the
fl oor, showing off their steps and moves.
During intervals, the Medan group led by their leader,
Ali, entertained the crowd, amidst loud applause with 4
creatively choreographed performance. Their dancers were

clad in a dazzling array of costumes. In between costume
changes, 2 singers from their group, rendered a few lively
songs, which prompted some cha-cha-ing and jiving on the
dance fl oor.
There was a brief but much needed respite from all the
strenuous dancing when the mouth watering sit-down dinner
was served. During table draws, lucky tables were rewarded
with attractive gifts. All September birthday celebrants
were feted with a birthday cake-cutting ceremony while all
present were also given door gifts.
When the night ended at 10.30pm, everyone went home,
exhausted with aching feet but happy and satisfi ed - with numerous cherished snapshots and memorable moments
to last them till the next event. Many dancers were heard
requesting to be invited again next year – an unmistakable
proof of the evening’s resounding success!

Despite player unavailability and registration cancellations,
the task of assembling 2 Teams to travel to Royal Ipoh Club
(RIC) on Sunday 9th September was completed.
Taking with us the “Challenge Trophy”, which we had managed
to retain for the past 2 years, the suspicion was that with
minimum players, and therefore minimum options, retention
for a 3rd straight year would be diffi cult. And so it proved!
Our arrival at RIC was met with warm reception, red roses for
the ladies and a hearty buffet lunch. Drinks were plentiful as
old acquaintances were renewed, and speculative plans were
made for future events.
As the “A” and “B” Team matches began, our “A” Team took
the opening Foursome to lead for the fi rst and only time in the match. Subsequent defeats followed, with only the
Doubles pairing of Piao & Michelle claiming a win, in what
fi nally ended as a 5 - 9 defeat for our “A” Team.
So the “Challenge Trophy” will reside in Ipoh until a rematch
at PSC sometime in the future, hopefully January 2019.
Our “B” Team of only 4 players (Walvin, Victoria, E.K.Lee
& Devyn) was tasked with trying to stay in the match and
mitigate the damage. They, however, were having none of
that, and immediately jumped into an early lead by winning
Darts News
the opening Foursome. As the lead continually “changed
hands” and with only the 2nd Doubles and fi nal Singles to play our “B” Team trailed 4 - 5. A hard fought 2 - 1 win in
the Doubles made the Team scores level at 6 - 6, and so the
match result depended on the fi nal Singles. E.K.Lee, playing the “anchor” role for the fi rst time, produced a nerveless display to win 2 - 0, and so secure a remarkable 8 - 6 win for
our “B” Team against all the odds.
Given the limitation of only having 4 players, and the quality
of the opposition, this win must rank as one of the best ever
performances by our “B” Team.
The day concluded with more drinking, closing speeches
and the passing over of the Trophy. Our hosts were, as
expected, as humble in victory as they had previously been
gracious in defeat. Wonderful hosts at a splendid Club, and
our sincerest thanks to them.
PSC Player Performances:
“A” Team - Michelle – gritty and determined. Contributing
towards 3 of the “A” Team’s 5 points.
“B” Team - No apologies for repeating the names. Walvin &
Victoria LaBrooy, E.K. Lee & Devyn Khoo.
All 4 performed way above expectation, for which they
deserve heartiest congratulations.
Finally, sincere thanks to those who made the trip to Ipoh, on
a day when many were unavailable.

Although the SeaFront Café was deserted, there was a packed
seating area adjacent to the Darts Room, as members
from PSC and Penang Sports Club met, for a Darts Match,
on the evening of Friday 28th September. Again, player
unavailability, due to illness and holidays, was an issue,
but PSC were still able to assemble 2 Teams of reasonable
strength.
Following a buffet dinner, short “welcome speeches” and
exchange of mementos, the matches began around 8.30pm.
After the usual stuttering start by the “A” Team, losing the
opening Foursome and the 1st Singles, PSC trailed 0 – 3.
Yeoh & Quah (1st Doubles) reduced the defi cit with a 2 – 0 win, followed by Michelle (2nd Singles) also winning 2 – 0 to
put PSC ahead 4 - 3.
From that point it was “downhill”, as the 2nd Doubles and
fi nal Singles were both lost 0 – 2, resulting in a 4 – 7 loss, and a second successive “A” Team defeat.
However, the sun continues to shine on our “B” Team!
Following on from the excellent performance at Royal Ipoh
Club, where our scratch “B” Team of only 4 players pulled
off an 8 – 6 victory, they continued in the same vein against
Sports Club.
Winning the opening Foursome and every Singles and
Doubles matchup thereafter, resulted in a fi nal resounding victory by 11 – 3.
So an evening of mixed fortunes for our Teams. The event
was attended by our Club President Lim Shin Lid and Club
Captain Michael Cheong, who have our thanks for delaying
their arrival until the “A” Team Match had been concluded,
and our darters “tears of disappointment” wiped away.
Performances:
“A” Team - Yeoh & Quah (Doubles) - Excellent & confi dent performance. Michelle (Singles) - “Hanging tough”, “never say
die” attitude as usual.
“B” Team - All players deserve mention: Walvin, E.K.Lee,
Yvonne, C.T.Lee, Jenny Lee, André & Devyn.
Thanks go to: Our guests from Sports Club for their
sportsmanship and humour in both victory and defeat.
Piao, Michelle & Victoria, for organising the match and
catering. Staff members Hossein & Areyenti for managing
the bar and buffet in their usual effi cient manner.

Heavy rain did not deter 30 enthusiastic karaoke members
from making their way to the Old Frees’ Association on 15th
of September. This is the fi rst time we were invited for a social session with the OFA karaoke section members.
A very warm welcome was the start of 'An Enchanted
Evening With PSC'. For some of us, we met many old friends
and made new ones too.
On 6th of October, a busload of 28 members from the
Music & Arts Section of the Royal Selangor Club paid us a
reciprocal visit. They were impressed with the food served
- especially the Penang laksa dish among others. After
dinner, all had fun going around looking for their “matched”
partners from the two clubs to sing duets with. We would
like to thank our members who sponsored the whiskies
and wines served at the lounge that evening.
Authentic chicken rice was served at the monthly gathering
on 12th October and 80 members attended. We take this
opportunity to sincerely thank the Hon. President, Hon.
Secretary and Hon. Club Captain for gracing our functions.

On 22nd September 2018, we once again welcomed the
Singapore team SG 10NIS back to our club. Although, they
are a small group of 8 players arriving with few supporters
from their side, it was more than enough to get the tennis
action going. Surprisingly, the weather was superb on that
Saturday morning. After some warm up hits and a nice
group photo - both team players quickly started out their
matches accordingly. It was defi nitely a friendly atmosphere with some matches won and lost by our team.
As the last match was progressing, the weather seemed
to change starting with a slight drizzle. Slowly, those who
have completed their matches started packing and getting
ready for lunch. Luckily, as the last match was completed
- only then did the rain started pouring down heavily.
By then everyone was done and heading towards The
Captain’s Restaurant. The guests were defi nitely amazed by the views from the dining area and the sumptuous food
being served. Lastly, we ended the friendly tournament
with a note of thanks by the captain of SG 10NIS.
