SELSIUS: A CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS EXPERIENCE

Since the beginning of civilization, people have used clay in the creation of creative objects that reflect a utility and spiritual nature. The early history of pottery has been proven by the discovery of ancient pottery artefacts found in the East Asia region such as China, Japan and Korea, at around 10,000 to 20,000 BCE. However, the discovery of artefacts in Malaysia dates back to 9,000 years BC, with the discovery of pottery artefacts in several exploration sites such as Gua Niah (Sarawak), Gua Cha (Kelantan), Bukit Tengku Lembu (Perlis), Jenderam Hilir (Kuala Selangor), Gua Harimau (Perak), Gua Taat (Kuala Terengganu), Bukit Tengkorak (Sabah). Well known traditional potteries in the country consist of Sayong, Pulau Tiga (Perak), Mambong (Kelantan), Terenang (Pahang), while the Sabah and Sarawak potteries employ technology by the Chinese immigrant. The early history of the pottery tradition constitutes hand building techniques of coiling and pinching and burned in the open firing at a relatively low temperature. However, in the early 70s, better firing technology consists of the use of a gas and electric kiln. In general, Malaysian society is more familiar with ceramic products that are often associated with flower pots. Their understanding of contemporary ceramic or ceramic art is limited because a formalistic ceramic art education started relatively late, namely at around the 50’s or 60’s.

According Ham Rabeah (2007), ceramic art began to flourish at the end of the 60s, which coincides with the formation of Mara Institute of Technology (ITM) in 1967. Pottery courses are offered as an area of specialization at the School of Art and Design in 1970. Ham Rabeah is the first graduate in ceramic art with a BA (Hons) from the UK and appointed as a lecturer for Pottery Course, ITM. Ceramic exhibitions in the country are very limited, for example, the first contemporary ceramic exhibition was

held at the National Art Gallery in 1989, entitled “Clay as an Expressive Medium”. This is followed by the Malaysian-Japan Ceramic Artist Exchange (MJCAX) 1992 and 1993 in ITM. The first international ceramic exhibition was held in 1994 entitled MJCAX-International Ceramics Workshop Exhibition, held at the National Art Gallery, 37 years after the country’s independence.

As a consequence of the slow development of the national contemporary ceramic scene, the Department of Product Design, School of the Arts, USM has taken the initiative to organize the first exhibition titled as SELSIUS-USM 2005. According to the Oxford dictionary, the term Selsius defined as a system of measuring the temperature in which water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees. The term Selsius chosen as the title of the exhibition because this word is synonymous with ceramic activity, which the term is also often expressed within the context of heating and materials used. The term Selsius is also a metaphor to reflect a spirit of hope amongst the ceramicists in the country in order to uphold its contemporary ceramic culture to thrive further.

SELSIUS-USM 2005 exhibition had some specific goals, in particular to provide the opportunity for the ceramic artist to participate in a prestigious exhibition, given that ceramic exhibition are quite rare and limited in the country. Young ceramic artists find it hard to get opportunities to participate in an exhibition dedicated especially to ceramics. Therefore, SELSIUS-USM 2005 exhibition can provide the chance to foster an appreciation of ceramic art in Malaysian society. The inaugural exhibition is organized by the Product Design Department, School of the Arts that gathered 43 artists from various institutions such as USM, UiTM, UPSI, IKN,

9

ceramic craft and ceramic studio artist. Subsequently in 2006, the SELSIUS-USM 2006 exhibition was held at The Souq, Putrajaya in partnership with Balai Seni Visual Negara and KeKKWa. Both exhibitions were well received by the audience and lovers of visual arts. In addition to paintings, ceramic art is also one of the important media in terms of 2D and 3D form.

The ceramic art in the country can further develop through a strong networking between local artists and other international artists and organizations related to ceramics. Benefits of the relationship between the author and Asia Ceramic Networks (ACN), Korea, can be seen to materialise since 2005, in particular when participating the ACN ceramics exhibition in Seoul and 2006 ACN-Silpakorn University in Bangkok. The idea for the ACN-SELSIUS 2007 exhibition took form in Bangkok during discussions with Park Sun Woo (Director ACN) and Nam Sook Chang (Coordinator ACN/Curator). Consequently, Park Sun Woo offered to help organise the ACN-SELSIUS 2007 especially in terms of cost and selection of international artists. Finally, on December 13, 2007, the dream of organizing a ceramic exhibition of international standard is achieved in collaboration with USM, Balai Seni Visual Negara, Institut Kraf Negara, and KeKKWa. The 2007 ACN-SELSIUS exhibition has a much broader objective that provides opportunities for Malaysian artists to further forge international linkages.

The development of Malaysian contemporary ceramics owes a lot to Nam Sook Chang. He is a Korean ceramic artist of international standing, as well as coordinator in international events in Korea. Nam Sook Chang often do not forget Malaysian artists in curated events like the Asian Ceramic Network (2005), Asia Ceramic Networks-Silpakorn University (2006), ACN-SELSIUS (2007), ACN Digital Catalog (2008), Asia Artist Networks (2008), Mungyeong Tea Bowl Festival (2010), Korean Accessory

Competition (2010), Onggi Festival Ulsan (2010), Korean Design Society (2012), Namisum Festival (2012), Namisum Festival (2013) and Korean Design Society, USM (2013). She serves as a bridge connecting Malaysian ceramic artists to the world of Korean ceramics. As a consequence of the success of the 2007 ACN-SELSIUS exhibition, several local artists, including the author were selected to participate various international ceramic activities. The selected artists consist of Roslan Ahmad, Umibaizurah, Mohamad Omar Bidin, Salwa Ayob and students of UiTM ceramics department. Ceramic artist should be grateful and thankful to Nam Sook Chang for her great contribution to the development of Malaysian ceramics.

In other countries, most ceramics symposium and exhibition activities are organised by institutions of higher learning with a ceramic department, for example, Seoul National University of Technology, Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Hacettepe University, Ankara, Abant Izzet Baysal, Bolu. Invitations to these activities are opportunities that should not be missed by any ceramic artist. In addition to representing the country and institution (employer), this opportunity can contribute towards one’s development in ceramics art and career.

The author’s participation in the Symposium Heykel (Sculpture) organized by the Abant Izzet Baysal, provides valuable opportunity to share experiences with young sculptors from countries such as Turkey represented by Assc. Prof. Melahat Altundag, Assc. Prof. Senem Aker, Perihan Aslan, Elif Agatekin, Tanzer, Kadir Sevim and others. The author also feels honoured to be introduced to Dr. Mutlu Baskaya, an individual who is well-known internationally, she is a board director of Turkish Ceramic Society, founder member of the International Ceramic Artist of China, member of the International Academy of Ceramic, Geneva and coordinator for Mascabal Wood Firing Symposium in Wanju, Korea, Zibo, China and

10

Ankara, Turkey. She has invited the author and others to participate in the International Mascabal Symposium in Hacettepe University, Ankara (2012) Zibo (2013) and Wanju, Korea (2013). Similarly, networking with Silpakorn University that is well known for its ceramics department established in 2006 managed by Assc. Prof. Sayumporn, Assc. Prof. Suppakka, Assc. Prof. Wanna Thithamma.Ceramics activities and networking increased within participants at the Century of East Ceramic Workshop (2013) and Sanamchandara Clay Work and Symposium (2014). Friendship as a result of networking remained constant until now.

In order to maintain the ongoing ceramic activities and networking, the Product Design Department, School of the Arts once again organises SELSIUS-USM International Ceramic Festival 2014. The concept of this ceramic festival is the first ever held in the country, because it consists of several segments - exhibitions, seminars, ceramic workshops, demonstrations of ceramic tradition, traditional ceramics exhibition, smoke firing and sales of ceramic crafts. This festival which constitutes 57 international artists from various countries such as Korea, Japan, USA, Belgium, Canada, UK, India, Turkey, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Switzerland and Malaysia.

Conclusion:SELSIUS-USM International Ceramic Festival 2014 is a platform for ceramic artists to advance in the world of international ceramics. They should also embrace the opportunity and obtain numerous benefits from this festival. The chance to meet and share experiences with artists from different countries is highly encouraged. Ceramic artists should emulate the spirit and hard work of other ceramic artists from overseas, especially from China, Japan and Korea. They need to be proactive in national and international seminars, workshops and exhibitions in order to develop skills and foster

networking. Indeed, ceramic artists who have the opportunity to participate in any ceramic activities can increase self-confidence as well as knowledge related to challenges in ideas, manufacturing techniques, materials and firing technology. Hopefully SELSIUS-USM International Ceramic Festival in 2014 will continue to become a benchmark for future ceramic events in the country. The festival also intends to promote Malaysia’s development of contemporary ceramics in the world.
