What is Boron

Boron is a chemical element with atomic number 5 and the chemical symbol B. Boron does not occur in elemental form in nature. It is combined with oxygen and other elements in compounds called borates. The most commercially important boron compunds are; borax, boric acid, kernite, ulexite and calcium borates.

Boron as a Plant Micronutrient

Macronutrients are essential elements utilized by plants in relatively large amounts for a healty plant growth. Each of these elements has a significant function in plant nutrition. The primary macronutrients are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potash (K), Sulphur (S), Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg).

In addition to these elements, plants also need other elements described as micronutrients.

The only difference between macronutrients and micronutrients are the required quantities. Although micronutrients are required in small quantities, they are as important as macronutrients in plant nutrition. Even all other essential nutrients are present in required amounts, it can limit the quality and yield if one of the micronutrients is insufficient.

Boron (B) is one of the micronutrients essential for plant growth.

Roles of Boron as a Plant Nutrient

Boron plays a major role in plant nutrition. Some functions of boron are correlated with nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium(K) and calcium(Ca) in plants.

Adequate B nutrition is critical for quality of crops and high yields.

The main functions of boron are related to:

• Carbohydrate metabolism• Root elongation• Protein synthesis• Seed formation• Cell wall formation• Rate of cell development• Sugar transport• Membrane integrity• Pollination and fertilization• Nucleic acid metabolism• Lignification• Respiration

Boron Deficiency

Soil parent material and texture are considered to be the major soil factors associated with the occurrence of B deficiency. Climate, particularly high rainfall conditions and low temperature are factors that need to be considered in relation to the occurrence of B deficiency.

Boron deficiency in crops may be suspected on the basis of symptoms and by plant analysis, and anticipated by soil analysis. Boron deficiency can be prevented and corrected by both soil and foliar applications.

Crops Susceptible to Lack of Boron

Certain crops are known to be highly susceptible to lack of boron while some are moderately.

Apples Coffee Oil Palm Asparagus Cocoa Pear

Cabbage Cotton Rapeseed Barley Coconut Potato

Caulif low er Cucumber Sugarbeet Beans Lettuce Radish

Celery Groundnut Sunflow er Broccoli Maize Rice

Correcting Boron Deficiency

Boron deficiency can be remedied by correct and timely application of solid or liquid B-fertilizers. Depending on the soil analysis, climatic conditions, previous cropping and the plant species application method can be changed.

Recommended Application Methods For Agriculture

Factors such as soil type, climatic conditions and the secification of the boron source such as solubility, pH and B2O3 content determines how much of boron will actually be available to plant either through root system or by absorption through leaf surface. For plants with waxy or oily leaf surface preferred application method should be through soil or though irrigation water.

The most common method of micronutrient application to soil is incorporating boron in bulk fertilizers. ACTIBOR range is suitable for mixing with bulk fertilizers and with liquid fertilizers prior to spraying.

The most common application methods are as soil application, foliar application and broadcasting.

Recommended application methods for AMF products are as below:

All grades of ACTIBOR series are suitable for all kinds of Boron deficient crops but choice of grade depends on desired solubility, soil type, plant, climatic conditions and method of application.

ACTIBOR 11 Blended with commonly used bulk/liquid fertilizers and micronutrient mixtures for soil application or foliar spray.

ACTIBOR 15

A versatile source of B in solid & liquid multi-micronutrient formulations, suspension fertilizers and also for directs

application in soils. It is a slow-released B fertilizer and usually applied as basal fertilizer. At serious B deficient

condition, it should be combined with foliar spray.

ACTIBOR 17Very effective in highly alkaline soils and in crops that is susceptible to sodium. Blended with liquid fertilizers,

pesticides and insecticides recommended for foliar spray.

ACTIBOR 20Multi-function source of boron that can be directly applied or blended with other liquid fertilizers, pesticides and

insecticides for foliar spray.

ACTICOL

Can be used as direct soil application or blended with rock phosphate, NPK or other fertilizers as a slow release B

source. Rate of dissolution for ACTICOL is less than highly soluble sodium borates, which prevents leaching of

boron due to heavy rain falls. The use of ACTICOL also provides calcium to the plants, which is an essential

micronutrient like boron.

Boron as a Timber Preservative

Among many organic and inorganic chemicals used for timber presevation, boron salts have been used in many countries for several decades and enjoy a well-known and proven record of performance. Field studies conducted by independent laboratories, universities and government testing facilities around the world attest to boron's outstanding and broad spectrum efficacy against all types of organisms like decay fungi, borers and beetles, termites etc. Furthermore, boron salts are characteristic of having the lowest acute mammalian toxicity among all known preservatives, which makes them the only accepted preservative for timber used in making pencils, toys and packing cases for food articles and etc.

Throughout the world borates have been remarkably effective in protecting wood products used in buildings for interior use, from termites, wood borers ,beetles, carpenter ants and decay fungi. Borates are also used to protect living forests as well as sawn timber, from attack of all timber destroying organisms.

Borates are also effective as fire retardant. Boron treated wood provides a safer environment by inhibiting the ignition of wood and slowing down the spread of flames.

How does Boron Work in Timber Treatment

The property of water solubility of borates enables easy mobility of the borate ion through membranes and allows diffusion throughout the wood's cellular network and provides complete and integral protection throughout the body of timber.

However, borates can mobilize out when wood becomes wet and hence are classified under the water soluble (leachable) class of wood preservatives. But it must be understood that this loss of boron from treated wood can only take place to a serious degree only when treated wood remains in prolonged continuous contact with running water or moist medium into which borates can diffuse. Therefore boron application is only suitable for interiors of buildings which are protected from direct contact with ground and continuous exposure to water.

ACTIBOR 67

ACTIBOR 67 is a highly soluble industrial wood preservative with active content of Di Sodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate (DOT). It is colourless, odourless, non-corrosive and low in acute mammalian toxicity. It is highly toxic to insects and fungi.

Recommended ApplicationMethods For Timber

ACTIBOR 67 is suitable for wide range of application methods. It can be applied as simple solution by brush, spray, dipping / immersion. ACTIBOR 67 can also be applied by vacuum pressure to dry or green timber for all interior and partially exterior applications.

Color and appearance of the wood is not affected when treated with ACTIBOR 67. Treated wood retains its original natural appearance and strength.

CERACOL

Our in-house R&D has specifically developed CERACOL as a value addition for glaze formulations, tile and sanitary ware body formulations.

Depending on the characteristics of the local raw material used:

• CERACOL can lower the melting temperature of glaze resulting in saving energy cost.

• CERACOL can be used in glaze formulations to replace Na-Feldspar.

• CERACOL can be added in tile body formulations resulting in decrease of firing temperature and good mechanical properties.

• CERACOL added in sanitary ware formulations results inmaturing temperature decreases and vitrification range widening.
