Some Wisdoms of the Surah of Adiyat

(The Coursers, 100)From Coolness of The Eye

By Allamah Nasir al-Din Nasir Hunzai

By the snorting coursers,by the strikers of fire,

    by the raiders at dawn,

blazing a trail of dust, cleaving there with a host!

Surely man is ungrateful to his Lord,

and surely he is a witness against that;and surely in the love of wealth he is tenacious.

Does he not then know when what is in the graves is raised, and what is in the heart is attained.

Surely on that day their Lord is aware of them.

    by the snorting coursers:

The courser of physical jihad is an animal, but the courser of spiritual jihad is first,Divine Remembrance and then knowledge, which both rise to different levels. When

remembrance (dhikr) and knowledge start to speak automatically, then they are called

dai. It is because of this that, in Nasir-i Khusraws Wajh-i Din, the tawilof the horse isdai, who is hidden in the personal world. InAdkhar(pl. ofdhikr), the most effective andsuccessful is rapid dhikr, and therefore, God swears by it. The tawilof the snorting of

the horse is to put pressure on the carnal soul by the rapidity and vehemence ofdhikr. It

also means to be absorbed in the voice of ones own dhikr.

    by the strikers of fire:

Striking sparks of fire, means the sparks of dissolving of soul, which happens as a result

of rapid dhikr. This is the tawilat the rank of soul. The wisdom ortawilat the rank of

intellect is higher than this. There, by striking the stone of intellect are scattered gems of

    secrets.

    by the raiders are dawn:

The wisdom-filled allusion of raiding at dawn is to do the kar-i buzurg(baytul khayal)

and special bandagi of the morning, which stands for the spiritual jihad by which is

gained the great treasure of spiritual wealth of spoils (48:20).

    blazing a trail of dust:

It should be remembered that the way the souls of all creatures of the universe arebrought together in the world of particles by spiritualjihadand the tempestuous powers

of the surof Israfil, they all are, according to Divine promise, many spoils ( maghanim

kathirah, 4:20); and to seize the soul by the act of Izrail is to raise the trail of dust

    cleaving there with a host!:

This was the spiritual victory. In order to gain the intellectual victory, another battle is

fought, for which higher and abundant knowledge is necessary, so that the army of

knowledge can penetrate the midst of the army of the enemy and be triumphant and

    victorious.

Surely man is ungrateful to his Lord:

Man is ungrateful to his Lord because he does not struggle profoundly to gain the abovementioned bounties and the great spiritual kingdom; neither does he duly toil at dhikr-u

bandagi, nor does he acquire knowledge and wisdom.

and surely he is a witness against that:

In many senses, man is aware of his own ingratitude, for he sees his spiritual

backwardness and the bright guidance and teaching of religion are in front of him.

and surely in the love of wealth he is tenacious:

Man likes the comfort of this world very much. That is to say, he is not so unaware that

he knows nothing about the bounties of spirituality and the Hereafter; rather, he knowsabout them but makes many excuses for his inaction.

Does he not then know when what is in the graves is raised:

As long a the soul is in the body, it is as if in a grave. Therefore, it has to be raised and

    elevated from it.

And what is in the hearts is attained:

Similarly, when the personal Resurrection of a mumin takes place, he acquires thesecrets of marifat (recognition) from theHudud-i Din (sudur= qulub, hearts).

Surely on that day their Lord is aware of them (i.e. He will make them aware):

Indeed, the Benevolent lord opens the door of great secret to every mumin-i salikin his

personal Resurrection, so that he may attain perfect marifat.
