What is a University of the Third Age (U3A)?
The U3A is “a body of persons
who undertake to learn and to help
others to learn” (Laslett, 1991). It is
an international movement that was
started in Toulouse, France in the
1970s by Prof. Pierre Vellas. U3A’s
worldwide offer a program of
activities to meet the “conditions,
needs and aspirations” of the elderly
(AIUTA). Today, U3A’s are found in
Europe, Asia, Oceania and different
parts of the world.
U3A in Malaysia
The U3A story in Malaysia began at
the Institute of Gerontology, UPM.
In 2007, with the support of the
Malaysian Government and the
United Nations Population Fund
(UNFPA), when a Lifelong Learning
Initiative for the Elderly (LLIFE) was
piloted. The success of the program
led to the establishment of the first
University of the Third Age in 2008
to promote active and productive
ageing through lifelong learning,
education and training in Malaysia.

Objectives
1. To encourage healthy, active
and productive ageing among
older persons through lifelong
learning activities, and;
2. To benefit from and to enhance
the potential, ability and
experience of older persons
through the University of the
Third Age program for National

Background
The idea for an association for U3A
members was proposed during the
annual FGD (focus group discussion)
session in 2008. Preliminary efforts
were made to draft a constitution
and a general meeting was called on
21 June 2009 to deliberate on the
matter. A Pro-tem committee team
led by Mr. Azlan Hussain was
elected to register the Association
with the ROS (Registrar of Societies).
On 25th October 2010, the
Association for Lifelong Learning of
Older Persons (U3A) Kuala Lumpur
and Selangor (No.: 2522-10-SEL) was
officially registered. With support
from the Institute of Gerontology,
UPM, the Association is the first
lifelong learning NGO for the elderly
in Malaysia to host a U3A program.
The first Annual General Meeting
(AGM) was held on 19th February
2011 where the new Committee for
2011/2012 was elected.
Assalamualaikum w.b.t., and hello to all our U3A members. This is our 1st newsletter and we hope everyone will find it useful, informative and interesting.
The U3A Kuala Lumpur and Selangor was successfully registered with the ROS in October 2010 .Our first AGM was held in February 2011 and the Committee for 2011/2012 was elected.
As a registered body, U3A KL and Selangor will function as an independent entity - by the elderly, of the elderly, for the elderly. As such, we call upon all members to step forward to contribute and help us improve.
As U3A members, we will be able to attend courses and participate in all activities organized by the association. Our time can be spent in pursuing our own hobbies and interests, as well as other enjoyable and meaningful pursuits. I urge everyone to take this wonderful learning opportunity to do what we can to stay active and find
ways to contribute and give back to society.
I would like to welcome all new and returning members to the U3A Malaysia program and hope you will enjoy the activities that we have planned this year. The lifelong learning program is for all senior citizens and it serves as a platform for all of us to socialize, interact and share our life experiences. You are free to communicate and share your thoughts and ideas with us, and the committee members are always ready to listen. We look forward to hear from our members so that we can continue to improve.
We are very thankful for the support and encouragement from the Institute of Gerontology, Universiti Putra Malaysia and we hope that the lifelong learning program in the Serdang campus will keep going strong. We wish everyone a fruitful learning experience at the U3A.
Wasallam and thank you.
