EARLY LIFE.He was born on 23rd September 1914 at Kampong Sultan Lama. He was the 28th Sultan of Brunei. He ascended the throne when his brother (Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin) died.

He received his informal education in the palace. At the age of 18, he began his formal education at the Malay College in Kuala Kangsar, Perak.

In his younger days, he showed interest in Malay poetry. He was also known as ‘Penyair Diraja’ (Royal Poet).

Timeline

1914 Born at Kampong Sultan Lama.

1932 Went to Malay College at Kuala Kangsar, Perak.

1936 Became a Cadet Officer in the Forestry Department.

1950 Proclaimed as the 28th Sultan of Brunei.

1941 Became an administrator in the Resident’s office. Married to Pengiran Anak Damit.

1947 Became Chairman of the Syariah Court. Became member of the State Council.

1951 Coronated at the Lapau.

1959 He signed the Brunei Constitution Agreement.

1961 He setup the Royal Brunei Malay Regiment.

1967 Brunei issue its first own currency note. He abdicated the throne and was known as Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien.

1986 He died peacefully and was buried in the Royal Mausoleum.
