33. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A Bird flu virus cannot infect humans. B Bird flu is caused by virus infection. C Bird flu can also affect other animals. D Bird flu can be cured by vaccinations.

Bird Flu Bird flu is killing big populations of birds and chickens especially in South-East Asia. This is frightening because in the past animal flu virus could not infect humans but now one virus has developed the power to infect people. The bird flu is caused by a new virus and we have no medicine or vaccinations for it. It is rather scary because this virus is more than one virus merged and the antibodies in the human immune system cannot overcome the virus when it attacks. Humans have no defense against this virus and they can die from the flu. The symptoms of the bird flu are the same as the common flu. You can get high fever, chills, a feeling of weakness and pain in the muscles, headache and stomach-ache. Even though, there is not a serious threat, the impact is seen as a loss to poor countries. Malaysian poultry farmers suffered losses because they could not supply chickens to Singapore and the neighbouring countries.

The flu usually starts in the countryside where people are not strict about hygiene. The people are poor and their villages do not have proper sanitation so diseases can spread easily. In order to prevent it, farmers need to modernise their farms and farming methods. Drug companies have to develop vaccines to control this disease.
