18 (a) An equation for the apparent frequency brought about by Doppler effect for sound is given by

A car moves at constant speed on a long straight road and its horn is sounded continuously. A microphone that is attached to a frequency meter is placed on the side of the road. It is observed that the position x of the car is in the manner as shown in graph above. Explain the shape of the graph.

19 (a) Two coherent microwave sources A and B are situated 28 cm apart as shown in the figure below. They emit waves of the same amplitude and which are in phase and polarized in the same plane. A microwave detector is placed on a line XY which is parallel to, and 300 cm from a line AB. M is the mid-point on the line AB. The line M perpendicular to the line AB meets XY at the point O. The detector is at a point P, 20 cm above O.

i) Explain the meaning of coherent sources in relation to the superposition of the two waves. [1 mark]

ii) If the detector at P detects a maximum intensity and there is no maximum between O and P, estimate the wavelength of the microwaves to two decimal places in cm.[3 marks]

iii) The intensity of the of the microwaves received by the detector at O is I0. If source B is rotated such as the axis of the polarization is now perpendicular to that of source A, determine the intensity of the microwaves received by the detector at O, in terms of I0.[4 marks]

(b) Parallel monochromatic light is incident normally on a diffraction grating having 3.0 X 105 lines per meter. A meter rule is positioned 2 m from the grating and parallel to its plane as shown in figure below. The axis of the rule is normal to the lines of the grating. Bright lines are observed on the rule at 14 cm, 50 cm and 86 cm marks.

i) Explain the meaning of the term diffraction. [2 marks]

ii) Calculate the wavelength of the light. [3 marks]

iii) Suggest one advantage and one disadvantage of obtaining the wavelength by using observations of a higher-order diffracted light.[2 marks]

(b) Sketch a graph to represent the typical X-ray spectrum produced by an X-ray tube. State three important characteristics of the spectrum, and explain the origins of the characteristics. [5 marks]

(c) The potential difference across an X-ray tube is 15 kV, and the current through the tube is 16 mA. Heat is generated at the rate of 238 W at the anode of the tube.

i) State the physical characteristic required for a material to be used as the target material [1 mark]

ii) Calculate the maximum speed achieved by an electron to reach the target [2 marks]
