Iwould like to congratulate the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) on her 75th

anniversary and the publication of this book to commemorate theoccasion. Since its inception, the RMN has progressed substantially

from a mere coastal keeper to a more sophisticated navy, a progressionwhich deserved special commendation.

The continuous force modernization program undertaken thus far hassignificantly improved RMN’s capability in fulfilling her roles and tasks. Thiswas made possible through the ability of the Navy People in adapting to thestate-of-the-art technology guided by visionary leadership. Thiscombination has paved the development of the RMN to a modern, versatileand credible force.

RMN’s maiden round the world voyage by KLD TUNAS SAMUDERA andthe successful conduct of the anti-piracy operation in the Gulf of Adenreflect the RMN’s capability to operate beyond its traditional waters. Therecent inclusion of submarines into the RMN inventory as strategic assetssignifies her leap towards a world class navy with the capability in alldimensions of maritime warfare. These achievements have also notablymarked the shift of the RMN from a brown to a blue water Navy.

I am confident, with such development and achievements, the RMN willcontinue to play her role effectively in national maritime defence. In thisregard, I have unwavering confidence with the RMN leadership in chartingthe course of the Navy towards greater successes. Those achievementsreflect RMN values and traditions which should be an inspiration to thenation.

Lastly, I would like to wish the Navy People ‘fair winds and following seas’.Congratulations again to the RMN on her 75th Anniversary. May ALLAHSWT bless her always.

Iam extremely delighted with the publication of this book to commemorate the RoyalMalaysian Navy’s 75th Anniversary. This pictorial book is intended to depict how theRMN evolved and developed from a brown to a blue water Navy. In this book, the

evolution of the Navy is illustrated in 3 periods of time, the first being from its formationas the Straits Settlement Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1934 till the independence ofMalaya in 1957. The second from 1957 till 1979 while the third period is from the timethe Navy moved from Woodlands, Singapore to Lumut in 1980 till the present day.

This book traces the progress of the RMN from her humble beginnings in the 1930s tobe at par with other world-class navies today. The progression and its contributiontowards the defence, security and development of the country is worthy of being sharedwith all Malaysians, especially the younger generation. The pictorial concept utilized inthis book is deemed appropriate; as the saying goes that “a picture paints a thousandwords”.

The memories contained in this book are dedicated to all the Navy People both past andpresent who have contributed their services to the Navy. The sacrifices of their families, whose support and encouragement allowed the navy men and women to go about theirduties diligently and wholeheartedly, have also not been forgotten. Their contributionsare invaluable and shall remain in the realm of RMN history.

I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone who wasresponsible, and has contributed in any way towards the realization of this publication.Their contributions to this project have been so invaluable too. I would also like toexpress my gratitude and appreciation to the editorial team for their untiring efforts incompiling this book. I would like to say well done, BZ and a big thank you.
