    BASIC FACTS ABOUT ORANGUTANS

    Orangutans are the only great ape to live in Asia, and are one of the four species of great apes that are

    the closest living relatives of humansthe other three are gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos. There

    are two species of orangutans, the Sumatran (Pongo abelii) and Bornean (Pongo pygmaeus).

    Orangutans have thin, shaggy, reddish-brown hair and long, powerful arms with strong hands that they

    can use to manipulate tools.

    Orangutans feed mainly on fruits. They also eat other kinds of vegetables, insects, small animals and

    birds eggs. Orangutans are only found on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo in Southeast Asia.

    Orangutans are arboreal creatures, which means they spend most of their lives slowly walking,

    swinging and climbing through rain forests.
