Summary(10 marks)

Read the article below and answer the questions that follow.

Teeth are not naturally pure white. People should understand that and not haveunreasonable expectations of what their smile should look like. There are many causesfor stained teeth.

Tobacco- whether it is smoked or chewed-is one of the worst offenders. Coffee, tea andcolas are culprits as well.

Other possible causes include fruit juices (especially grape), red wine, fruit such as

blueberries, soya sauce and curry. It is said that if it will stain your carpet permanently, itis not great for your teeth.

Ageing also contributes to the yellowing of teeth. The enamel, which is the hard outercoating of your teeth, wears thin, allowing the underlying layer of yellowish dentine toshow through.

There are also some stains that are called intrinsic. That is, they are actually occurring onthe inside of the teeth. For example, children who take the antibiotic tetracycline (orwhose mothers took it during pregnancy) often have such stains. Silver-coloured fillingscan sometimes leach out and stain the surrounding teeth.
