Figure 12 and 13 show some ice cubes left to melt in a cup at room temperature for 10 minutes.

(a) What is meant by temperature? [ 1 mark] (b) Observe Figure 12 and Figure 13, and compare the states of matter and the

thermometer readings. Relate the change in state and the thermometer readings to come up with a conclusion of the physics concept involved.

(c) When a few drops of ether is dropped on a student’s hand, his hand felt cool. Explain how this happenend.

The figure above shows a plastic container filled with ice. If it is left to stand at room temperature, the ice will melt fast. Using the appropriate physics concepts, explain the modifications to an ice container so that ice does not melt easily when the container is placed in room at room temperature.

(c) A student suspects her gold bangle is an imitation. The mass of the bangle is

165 g. The density of gold is 19.3 g cm –3 .
