Many ASEAN countries have low per capita meat consumption, as a result of low incomes and often a lack of a developed livestock industry. These countries, however, are showing some of the fastest growth in consumption terms, and although from a low base, the impact in terms of global meat demand is signi�cant. Modernising livestock production in these developing countries provides investment opportunities for improved farming systems, genetics and feed, as well as the need to educate producers to adjust to different challenges and opportunities within the AEC.

Food and agriculture are two of the key sectors that play an integral role in the sustainable economic development of the AEC Blueprint 2025. Adopted during the 27th ASEAN Summit in 2015, ASEAN cooperation took emphasis in developing new technologies, best practices and management systems that will ensure food safety and environmental issues, particularly in the region’s fast-growing livestock, aquaculture, meat and meat-processing sectors.

Rising population, strong income growth and increasing number of middle-class status across the ASEAN will mean expanding demand for both livestock production and consumption. Livestock development has become one of the region’s top priorities to be able to meet the demand for products such as meat, eggs and processed foods.

Towards the integration of member economies, the ASEAN envisions a single market and production base with global and competitive economy that will contribute to food safety and nutrition security. Going beyond 2015 – increase crop, livestock and aquaculture production; enhance trade facilitation, sustainable production and equal distribution; develop resilience to climate change; improve productivity and product quality; develop halal products production and promotion; and promote ASEAN as a food production base achieving international standards – are the key strategic measures that are now being implemented in the ASEAN Economic Community.
