PRACTICE 1

I cant remember what I have 1 ! This is a regular complaint of students. Have you ever

2 why you remember certain stories and not others? Certain facts but not all? Simple! That is because we do 3 things which are of interest to us and those which are not, we simply

forget them.

So what is the secret of 4 ? Make revising your lesson a part of your regular daily routine. You should revise your lesson whenever and where ever you have the chance. Asking questions, writing down notes and reflecting on the topic that you are 5 are examples of

active learning. This is an example of a good while-reading strategy.

A house with no noise is a suitable learning environment. Noise is a distracter. While you are 6 , you also need to free your mind from unpleasant thoughts and confusing emotions about 7 boyfriends or girlfriends.

Most topics have an introduction, sub-headings and conclusion. Understanding and organising the materials you wish to study would really help. Do 8 your mind a break after about 45 minutes of studying and then getting back to it will help you to focus better on your lesson. Finally, have a happy attitude and you will retain more.

The first thing we can do is increase the number and variety of potted plants in our school. It

extracurricular activity.

The second thing that we can do is conduct regular gotong-royong or cleaning up sessions to

7

the already existing plants in our school. There is already too much for the school

gardeners to handle and perhaps we can help in the less difficult activities. We could weed and water the plants near our classrooms and even cut plants according to our own designs.

The third thing we can do is to 8 turns watering the plants. These 9 rewarding

experiences and there is no word to describe the joy that we feel when we see the plants under our care 10 well.

I hope you will share my excitement in this task. Thank you.

Dear Amin,

How are you? It has been some time since I last 1 (wrote, write) to you. I have been really busy settling down here in the city. I do miss living in Kampong Kelulut but the city has many advantages. Let me tell you about some of them.

Firstly, the public amenities here 2 (are, were) excellent. We have museums, parks, zoo and many other places to visit. Everyone from the children to senior citizens is able to enjoy them.

Getting around the city is also a breeze. There are ample buses, taxies, trains and even trishaws. The public transportation here is very efficient as they arrive and leave on time. The buses and others are fully air-conditioned, which makes traveling a very comfortable experience.

As for entertainment, there is always something for everyone such as cultural performance, ballets, and live band, at any time of the day, every day. They are often staged at the theatres. There

3 (are, were) great places to watch movies too. I 4 (watch, watched) the latest movie,

which 5

(is, was) Cicakman 2 with my father and sister, and it 6

(is, was) a truly

enjoyable experience.

Most importantly, the opportunity to further studies here 7 (is, was) rather remarkable. Last week I 8 (visit, visited) my sister Aminah who is studying in College Murni. There are many colleges, universities and training institutes to apply. The colleges are varied and if she is not academically inclined, she could be apprenticed at a hotel, saloon, nursery or even a bakery.

I 9 (think, thought) my parents 10 (make, made) the right decision in allowing me to join them here in the city. I 11 (know, knew) my grandmother 12 (want, wanted) me

there with all of you in the holidays. Take care and send my love to everyone.

Yours sincerely,

Farid

Dear Aunt Sarah

I am a fifteen years old. I transferred to a new secondary school in Kuala Terengganu recently. I was in a small rural school before this. In my previous school, I used to have many friends.

My problem is that I find it hard to get along with people now.

After one month in the new school, I still do not have any friend. In class I often remain silent. I am afraid to speak. I am worried to say anything. I always think my opinion is silly. I feel upset about this problem.

I want to have more friends. I want to learn from them. Please help me to solve this problem.

HOW TO WRITE YOUR SUMMARY

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter to express my appreciation to all Malaysians who had made my visit to Malaysia a meaningful one.

Upon reaching Kuala Lumpur International Airport, I took a taxi to Kuala Lumpur city. The taxi driver greeted me with a warm smile and showed me to his taxi. He was also kind enough to recommend places of interest that I should visit in your country.

Over the next few weeks, I travelled around the country. I visited Melaka, Pulau Langkawi, Pulau Redang and Genting Highlands, just to name a few. In Langkawi, I had the opportunity to be with the locals and also enjoy home-cooked dishes. I was truly touched by their friendliness and hospitality. It was a wonderful experience!

What I found unique about Malaysia is the way people of different races and religions live peacefully as one. I noticed this from the way Malaysians celebrated their National Day. Clearly, the way everyone came together is an excellent example of tolerance and understanding. This is what Malaysia should highlight to the rest of the world.

Let me say terimakasih to all those who have made my stay a memorable one. I will definitely come again and I would also promote Malaysia to all my friends back in England.

PRACTICE 1

Dear Diary,

I had a fantastic time during the last school holidays. After receiving his bonus, dad took us to Layang-Layang Atoll, a beautiful coral island, situated north of Sabah

We checked into holiday resort late that evening. Then, we immediately rushed out to witness the breathtaking sunset. After dinner, we went early to bed, looking forward to the

activities we were going to do the next morning.

Rising early, we went snorkeling in the cool, clear waters off the island. The scene before us was colourful and amazing. The live corals floated along with the movements of the current and we saw a wonderful variety of fish. Among them were puffer fish, clown fish and angel fish.

The next day, we had another wonderful experience. We went scuba-diving under the supervision of an expert. I was glad to be close to nature. I thanked God for giving me this wonderful opportunity.

On our last night, we stayed awake till the wee hours of the morning. It was because we

were enjoying a fine barbecue by the seaside with fish that we had freshly caught from the sea.

It was certainly a memorable holiday

Last Friday, Zahar went to the beach for a picnic with his family. They woke up very early that morning and drove down to Cherating.

When they got there, the beach was already crowded. However, they managed to find a

nice shady spot. Within minutes, Zahar and his sister had changed into their swimming costumes. Then, they dashed off towards the water. They found the water cool and refreshing. An hour later, they all gathered around their mother who was serving their lunch on a mat. As usual, their mother had prepared delicious dishes. They sat down and ate to their hearts content.

After lunch, Zahar and his sister rested for a while. Then they had a competition to see who could build the biggest and best sandcastle. Their mother, of course, was the judge. Zahar felt proud when she chose him to be the winner. They then strolled along the beach together to look for seashells and managed to find some really pretty ones.

Then, they went for another swim. They splashed about happily for an hour. Later their father called out that it was time to go home. By the time, he had loaded everything into the car. Zahar and his sister were completely fatigued.

All in all, it was an exhausting yet extremely enjoyable day.

Write a summary on what the writer and his sister did at the beach

PRACTICE 3

Although people generally say that television is bad for children, research has proven otherwise.

It has been found that TV is an interactive tool that encourages children to develop their social and communicative skills. By watching TV, they are more carefree, open and find it easy to communicate with others.

TV also helps them develop their English Language skill through programmes like Sesame Street and Playhouse Disney. It is no secret that their listening abilities are enhanced as well as their speaking and grammar skills.

Ultimately, TV also provides them a cheap avenue to firs-class knowledge through channels like National Geographic, Discovery, Animal Planet, TV IQ and the various other educational mediums available.

Clearly, TV has plenty to offer to our children. It is a waste if parents misunderstood the wealth that provides to their children and prevent them from watching it on the excuse that it spoils them.

Write a summary on the advantages of television to our children. Begin with:

Watching TV brings about the many advantages to children, such as ............
