The Future of the Past:Berlin’s Confrontation and Oscillation between Modernism & Traditionalism

Post war Berlin was once the testing ground for modern architecture and urban planning. Both east and west were emphasized modernism in their re visioning of the city. The modernist ideas are criticized as destruction rather than reconstruct the city and totally change the urban form of Berlin. The white space seen as the scar of war and also the aftermath of radical modernism that might never heal, either architecturally or historically that lost its vibrancy and energetic urban quality spaces compare to pre-war Berlin. The thesis aim to retain the scar of war in Berlin while reconstruct the city as collective memory and in searching of history and identity.

Using Berlin traditional urban block typology as initial concept the proposal reflected the expressiveness and interstitial spaces. The court yard and the passage way of traditional urban block had formed an interesting network of connectivity between the street (public) and courtyard space (semi-private). The proposal introduced a contradiction of circulation with standard housing that shows the expression and porosity of architecture to reveal the social interaction agenda, potential of connecting spaces.

The Digbeth Roman Bath

Together with the existing communities, the proposal is to provide a social platform for the new investors to have conversation and networking in order to sustain and promote the local identity while regeneration of the city takes place. The idea of a classical communal place come into mind where people could have a dignified, relaxed and genuine conversation - The Roman Bath. The Roman baths were a central part of Roman social life, provided an opportunity for citizens to socialize, exercise or simply being a place for people to cleanse themselves. As the Roman concept ‘cultus’ the care of the body as a sign of civilization and culture. It is a place of recreation but also fulfilled a deeper social and cultural role in past and present. To elevate the bathing experience to next level, the program enhance with the collaboration of the branch of British Chamber of Commerce in Digbeth. The relationship between bath house and BCC happened when events and workshop or even public announcement held in bath house. Imagine through the process of cleansing, a businessman and a new emerged gallery owner having a business strategy forum in a bath pool sharing their experience and thoughts without the barrier of the social class, age, income or even gender. The proposal is a sensual experience that stands in opposition to our digital age. A solid space where one could enjoy through the shuttered concrete and waffle slab as the tectonics of the architectural profile and making it prominent in lights and shadows through the progression of the journey in the bath process.
