Papua New Guinea is a unique land steeped in culture and mystery. True to its claim of being one of the last frontiers on earth, the natural beauty and intricate history of this country beckon to be explored.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the eastern half of the second largest island in the world. Fringed by spectacular coral reefs, it’s surrounded by thousands of atolls and smaller islands, some of

which are volcanic.

While this equatorial landmass lies wholly within the tropics, running down the length of the island’s rugged interior are mountain peaks that experience snowfall. In the Highlands, the wide ridge of mountains is so densely forested and topographically forbidding that the different groups that migrated to this remarkable landscape developed their own languages and tribal culture. As a result, PNG boasts one of the most diverse and fascinating cultural landscapes in the world.

Situated just south of the equator, the climate in PNG is tropical. The wet and dry seasons, however, are not as pronounced as in Asia; therefore, while the humidity can be high at times, the temperatures rarely get too hot. Rainfall in PNG is usually heavy but varies greatly across the region, with the wet season experienced from around

December to March, and the dry season from May to October. Nonetheless, there are exceptions to this rule with Alotau and Lae experiencing the wet season when other regions are dry. In April and November, the climate can be quite unpredictable across the region. The island provinces have a steadier climate during the dry season, with milder temperatures and infrequent, light rainfall.

PNG has a relatively small population of around 7.8 million people, yet there are 820 different languages spoken in the country. In fact, a quarter of the world’s languages belong here with English, Pidgin and Motu being the official languages.

There is a myriad of diverse and exotic cultures within PNG. Many people still live traditionally in small villages and their existence is dependent on subsistence farming. In most cases, the women are responsible for the day-to-day work such as gardening and caring for young children. There are many festivals throughout PNG during the year that celebrate their customs and culture.

Having so recently come into contact with the customs of the modern world, the cultural riches and extraordinary wilderness of PNG are a traveller’s delight. Few destinations canvas such untouched beauty as well as an alluring history. Whether you continue your trip in the lap of luxury or you decide to travel off the beaten track, the exotic mystique of PNG will surely inspire memories beyond compare.

PAPUA NEW GUINEAIslands of

It’s believed that Papua New Guinea holds thousands of islands within its serene, cobalt waters. The islands that are known offer their own unique history and culture.

Travelling to the islands is easy, whether you travel by plane or not. In most cases, visitors can travel to major cities or towns and then catch a banana boat to any specific island. Set plans can be

difficult to manage in Papua New Guinea, but the locals will make sure that you end up where you need to go.

Milne Bay, which takes in the D’Entrecasteaux and Trobriand Islands, is a veritable paradise for island lovers. The region has everything to offer for visitors and is one of the main tourist destinations for travellers to PNG. For hikers, be sure to take the trek from Weddau to Alotau, which takes between three to four days.

The savage fighting that occurred during World War II between Australia and Japan took a heavy toll on Alotau, the capital of Milne Bay Province. In 1942, 900 Allied Forces were stationed at Milne Bay and the Japanese bombed the area aggressively in an attempt to secure a base there. Ultimately, the Japanese landed in August 1942, but were confronted by the large group of Allied Forces who were by this time very experienced in jungle warfare. Approximately 1,200 men, combined, died at Milne Bay and today remnants and memorials are found throughout the region.

Although Milne Bay has more than 600 islands, only 160 are inhabited making the area intriguing to visitors

who want to take their time to explore it. Birdwatchers are fascinated with Milne Bay, which boasts a good variety of parrots, palm cockatoos, hornbills, bowerbirds, birds of paradise and king fishers.

The D’Entrecasteaux Islands extend 160 kilometres across the region and includes Goodenough, Fergusson and Normanby Islands. While the naming of the island Goodenough might suggest a quirky history, it was in fact named by Captain John Moresby after a naval colleague, James Graham Goodenough. In the central area of Goodenough Island, visitors are privy to fascinating rock paintings and, around the coast, the snorkelling is spectacular because of the abundant marine life here. Visit the hot springs on Fergusson Island, the largest of the islands in the region, or trek the one and half hour hike from Warluma to Mt Lamanai for exhilarating panoramas.

Manus Province is another unique region of PNG. The smallest of all the provinces, it consists of a group of islands called the Admiralty Islands. The main island of Manus boasts tall heavily-timbered hills, streams and a striking waterfall of fresh water, and is home to the Emerald green snail. Known for its fishing and diving, Manus is now popular for its sea kayaking. If you haven’t tried this sport before and you enjoy the water, then consider taking a tour with one of the local companies. Tours can be as short as one day or up to seven days.

New Ireland Province is a fascinating region that has a multitude of remote island paradises that are worth checking out. While home to the famed Lihir Group of islands, and one of PNG’s wealthiest gold mines, the area extends to the St Mathias, The Tabar and the Tanga Islands. The region offers great diving, surfing and fishing.

Many parts of Papua New Guinea remain shrouded in mystery, as its remoteness has kept it isolated in many ways from modern influences. Its cultural origins are still evident today.

There is archaeological evidence to suggest that humans first reached PNG by island hopping across the Indonesian archipelago from Asia over 60,000 years ago. This original migration was made

possible by a fall in the sea level during the Pleistocene period and a lifting of the earth’s crust that formed a land bridge linking PNG with northern Australia.

Human habitation in the Western Highlands Province stretches back 20,000 years ago, and stone axes found at early coastal settlements in Morobe Province are dated at 40,000 years old. New Ireland and Buka were inhabited approximately 35,000 years ago, and Manus Island in the north 10,000 years ago. Since these times, people have lived in small villages on well-established tribal lands.

Papua New Guineans survived by hunting and fishing for food and practicing shifting cultivation, a system for which plots of land are cleared and planted with crops then abandoned when the fertility diminishes.

Papua New Guineans are also believed to be among the world’s first farmers. At Kuk Swamp in the Wahgi Valley, Western Highlands Province, archaeologists have found evidence of gardening that can be traced back to 9,000 years earlier. From there, farmers cultivated breadfruit, sago, coconut, yams and sugar cane.

It’s not known when pigs were introduced to the region,

but there have been domesticated pigs in PNG for at least 5,000 years now. Pigs are both economically and culturally the most significant livestock in PNG.

Each settlement comprised of one extended family with additional captives gained from raiding neighbouring settlements, and people worshipped ancestors, not gods. Ritual headhunting, slave raiding and cannibalism were commonplace.

The dispersion of distinct, ornately decorated pottery fragments, known today as Lapita Pottery, identify the second wave of migration, which began about 3,000 years ago.

The Lapita people originated from the eastern regions of Asia. As intrepid explorers and pioneers, they travelled with everything they needed to colonise new regions. Their level of skill as artisans is evident in their complex pottery, shell artefacts, ground-stone adzes (an ancient wood tool used in woodworking) and flaked-stone tools made of rocks such as obsidian.

The Lapita people spoke Austronesian and Polynesian languages and it was in Tonga and Samoa that they developed into the race we now call Polynesians.

There’s plenty of occasion for ceremony and celebration in the traditional cultures throughout PNG. A traditional gathering known as a ‘sing-sing’ is great cause for elaborate body adornment followed by dancing, drumming and singing.

Visitors have the opportunity to witness these special displays during various cultural festivals hosted annually around the country. Each region celebrates its own unique customs and costumes often in spectacular fashion, so visitors are encouraged to attend regional festivals where possible to experience the sheer diversity of PNG culture.
