LAND SEA AIR
The Corps
Any challenge
First and foremost, the Royal Marines are an amphibious fighting force. We arepart of the Royal Navy and, using Royal Navy ships as our base, we can launchhard-hitting assaults either by sea or air.
We are also the UK’s specialists in mountain and extreme cold weather warfare. We are experts in climbing, skiing, mountaineering and survival skills, so we cancarry out operations in extremely hostile conditions, from the Arctic to deep
jungle to barren deserts anywhere in the world.
The Commando traditionThe Royal Marines have a tradition of bravery which stretches back more than300 years and began in the reign of Charles II.
The first Royal Marines regiment called the ‘Admiral’s Regiment’ was formed on
28 October 1664 by order of the Privy Council. The Regiment of 1200 men wasraised to fight the Dutch at sea. This gallantry laid the foundations for the Royal
Marines’ reputation. Through history there have been many Corps memorabledates, and many of these have been incorporated into the Badge of the RoyalMarines. You are encouraged to research and take an interest in these
memorable dates as it will prepare you for your selection process. For moreinformation please refer to the website royalmarines.mod.uk.
During the Second World War, the Allies needed troops who could launch
attacks on land targets from the sea. That is when the Royal Marines began theCommando tradition – and when we started to develop the training and valuesthat are at the heart of the Royal Marines today.
The Royal Marines todayAt the heart of today’s Royal Marines is 3 Commando Brigade. This is madeup of a wide variety of Royal Marines and other Units, spearheaded by threeCommando Units, each nearly 700 men strong: 40 Commando Royal Marines,
42 Commando Royal Marines and 45 Commando Royal Marines.
Each Commando Unit is equipped with a range of vehicles, from armoured
all-terrain Viking vehicles to quad bikes and skidoos. They have state-of-the-artradio communications and a wide variety of Commando weapons, includingsniper and assault rifles, grenade launchers and various types of machine guns,
mortars and anti-tank weapons.
The three Commando Units are supported by other Units providing specialist
support such as fast-raiding craft, landing craft, helicopters, air defence andelectronic warfare, logistics and communications.
All this makes us a highly flexible force, ready to go anywhere and able toperform all kinds of combat roles – one of the reasons we play such an
important part in the UK’s Armed Forces.

and determination.

The Corps
Our role
With airfields occupied by enemyforces and land attack routesblocked, often the best way to
launch an assault is from the sea. That is where the Royal Marinescome in.
We can operate from a floatingbase at sea on Royal Navy assault
ships. Even our presence offshore can transform the combatsituation on the ground. However,if we need to, once we are in
position, we can launch an attackby sea and by air.
On land, we are flexible and fastmoving, and able to carry outa number of missions. We can
launch sudden attacks on enemypositions, rescue civilians orprisoners, and seize or destroy
critical objectives. Alternatively,we can secure air or sea portsto allow other forces to build up
for a bigger assault.
Moving from ship to shoreFor an amphibious assault, wenormally deploy from one of theRoyal Navy’s assault ships, such as
HMS Albion. These ships can carrymore than 700 Commandos andour kit, so we are ready to go as
soon as we arrive.
Moving troops from ship to shore,
speed is the critical factor. At sea,we can use rigid raiding craftto carry eight fully equipped
Commandos at speeds of up to40 knots. Or we can use landingcraft to carry large numbers of
troops and vehicles ashore. If thewater is very shallow, we may usehovercraft or inflatable boats.
Meanwhile, the Sea Kings of theCommando Helicopter Force and
Royal Air Force Chinooks candeliver troops, vehicles, heavyweapons and supplies by air.

In action –Operation Telic, IraqIn March 2003, the Royal Marines
were the first assault troops toenter Iraq in the last Gulf War,when they were tasked to secure
the oil facilities on Iraq’s al-Fawpeninsula and gain a foothold forthe advance on Basra.
An initial helicopter night assaultwas launched both from land
bases and from HMS Ark Royal.Royal Marines from 40 and 42Commando, carrying more than
100lb of kit each, waded throughankle-deep mud to quickly secure
their initial objectives. Overhead,
Lynx and Gazelle helicopterscarried out combat air patrols toprovide intelligence on enemy
movements. Within just over48 hours, the Royal Marines had
taken the oil facilities and beguntheir advance north into Iraq.
The Royal Marines went on to
play a crucial role at the forefrontof the UK forces in Iraq, taking
part in the assault on Basra andworking with the Royal Navy toclear mines from waterways to
speed up the arrival ofhumanitarian aid.

Rapid reaction
Our roleA military crisis can developincredibly quickly – which is whythe UK needs armed forces that
can deploy rapidly to whereverin the world they are needed.
The Royal Marines are a vital partof the UK Joint Rapid ReactionForce – a team made up of forces
from across the Royal Navy, Armyand Royal Air Force that standsready for action at a moment’s
notice.
Our skillsWe can get to our area ofoperation on a Royal Navy assaultship, or we can fly on board an
RAF transport aircraft. SomeCommandos are even trained to
parachute in.
Once we are on the ground, ourtraining kicks in. We can move
quickly over long distances by foot– known as ‘yomping’. Or we canuse customised Land Rovers and
quad bikes. The Viking all-terrainvehicle is a new addition to ourarmoury. It allows us to move
quickly into battle while protectedfrom shrapnel and small-arms fire.

airport, so that crucial UnitedNations supplies could bedelivered.
By June, UK forces were able tohand over military control to the
United Nations, leaving only theimportant business of a footballmatch with Sierra Leone’snational side before the journey
back home.

Our roleThe Royal Marines are the UK’sspecialists in mountain and coldweather warfare. We are the firstto deploy to combat in these harshenvironments.
The skills we use to operate inthese areas are also used by ourBrigade Reconnaissance Force andForward Observation Teams whogo in ahead of the main force toscout out enemy positions, identifyobjectives and create diversions.
Our skillsSurviving and fighting in themountains or in extreme coldweather takes special skills. TheRoyal Marines exercise regularlyin Norway and in the mountainsof Scotland to keep those skillsrazor sharp.
In the snow, we are trained tomove quickly on skis and tosurvive the extreme cold. Weare also trained to navigate andto camouflage ourselves in thebarren landscape.
For operations in mountainousareas, we have specialists trained inrock climbing and mountaineering.
Specialised battle skills for combat in cold
and hostile conditions.
In action –Operation JacanaIn February 2002, 45 Commando
Royal Marines were the UK’s firstconventional forces to deploy intoAfghanistan, in support of Special
Forces and US forces, in operationsagainst Al Quaeda and the Taliban.
The Commando unit sailed in HMSOcean to the North Arabian Gulf. When ordered they then flew in by
helicopter, complete with all theweapons and equipment theyneeded. They set up an operatingnear Kabul.
Carrying very heavy loads in thethin air, the unit conducted 60
days of offensive operations ataltitudes of up to 13,500ft, oftenpatrolling on foot in the rugged
mountains but also using vehiclesand helicopters. Their mission wasto clear the area of Al Quaeda and
Taliban forces and to close the
terrorists’ infilitration routes, bothof which they successfullyachieved.

The world can be a dangerousplace. Hurricanes, earthquakes, famine and other natural disasters
can cause great suffering. War canforce refugees to flee their homeswithout food, water or shelter.
Sometimes, the Royal Marinescan provide a helping hand to
the people around the worldwho face these disasters. We canmount rescue operations using
