Research and development ofa hybrid
luminescent and holographicsolar
concentrator integrated with bi-facial solar cells
(03-02-11-SF0122)
General Objectives:- 1. To reduce the cost of building integrated concentrating photovoltaic
system 2. To improve the efficiency of the building integrated concentrating
photovoltaic systems 3. To encourage the use of photovoltaic systems in Malaysia in order to
reduce the greenhouse gas emission and over dependence on the fossil fuels for electricity generation.
Specific Objectives:- 1. To develop a hybrid luminescent and holographic solar concentrator
to be integrated with bi-facial solar cells with appropriate orientation.
2. To establish the concept, model and efficiency of solar energy transfer across the hybrid luminescent and holographic solar concentrator.
3. To investigate the performance, characteristics and durability of the hybrid concentrator under diffuse and direct sunlight.
• Penerbitan: 3 • Gold medal at 24th
International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition, ITEX 2013 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
• The newly invented solar solder for bifacial solar cells is currently being patented. At the same time, the university is approaching a number of PV manufacturers and solder suppliers so that these companies will be interested to purchase the patent for the production of cheap PV panels.

AMOR: An Adaptive, Multimodal
Architecture for Visual Object Recognition
(01-01-10-SF0176)
The general objective of this research is to develop a novel architecture for the difficult, but crucial, problem of recognising objects in visual scenes. An Adaptive, Multimodal architecture for Object Recognition (AMOR) will be developed that extends existing unimodal (visual-only) systems and has the potential to increase their accuracy.
The specific objectives of this research are to design, implement and evaluate the proposed architecture. The architecture design will be formalised mathematically and algorithmically, implemented in software and evaluated by comparison to an existing modern system for object recognition.
It is expected that AMOR will achieve more accurate object recognition performance than a standard visual-only approach when applied to the same visual scenes.
• Penerbitan: 1
• The longer-term approach will be to pursue collaborations with local and international companies in order to deploy the algorithms developed in this project within suitable commercial products such as CBIR systems and robot vision cameras.

Low-Cost and Sustainable
Technology for Harvesting Humic
Acids (06-01-09-SF0086)
This proposal describes an attempt to harvest HS from peat runoff (tropical black stream water, TBW) using agro-wastes as biosorbents. The primary focus will be to (a) verify the viability of local TBW bodies as sustainable sources of HS, (b) optimise the sorption yield of selected biosorbents from local agriculture wastes, (c) produce humates with a relatively higher proportion of FA (against HA), and (d) develop a simpler and cost effective technique for purifying the highly valued and more bioactive FA from crude HS extracts.

• The results of the project demonstrates that coconut copra meal is a potential biosorbent for water treatment. This product may be up-scaled to be employed in water treatment plant especially those treating humic-rich water.
