SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES
School children have a lot of free time during the long school holidays. Some take this opportunity
to get a temporary job while others try out new hobbies or interest.
Marina, who is 16 years old, took a job at a fast food restaurant to save money for her college
education. She says that she is enjoying her job because she likes the easy-going environment
and being able to learn a new trade.
Rizal, who turns 17 in March, said he did have to look far for a temporary job. He is working as
an assistant in the accounts department in his father’s company. He plans to be an accountant in
the future and believes getting on-the-job training will help build a strong foundation.
Kareena, who loves to sing, is spending some of her holiday time making videos with her sister
and posting them online. Besides taking vocal lessons, the 17-year-old has been volunteering at
a kindergarten as a teacher’s assistant and at an orphanage giving English tuition to the children
there. These opportunities help strengthen her communication skills and confidence when
meeting new people.
Sui Ling, on the other hand, decided to enrol in an exchange programme. She has gone to South
Korea in the past. This holiday, she is going on a two-week study trip to Oxford. She will attend
daily English lessons and tour interesting places. She says that she will continue to go on these
study trips as long as she can because they widen her knowledge about world views and help her
be more independent.

Read the following text. Then, answer questions (a) – (j).
GUIDED NATURE WALKS IN LANGKAWI
The next time you visit Langkawi, include a tour of the Langkawi rainforest. You can
choose either a morning or a night guided nature walk. For the morning tour, bring a hat,
a camera and a bottle of water. To kick start your nature tour, you will be taken to see a
Langkawi landmark – the iconic brahminy kite, the species of the bird statue at Dataran
Lang in the town of Kuan – before heading to the starting point of the rainforest tour.
Then, visitors will be taken on a walking tour to see flora and fauna in Langkawi’s
rainforest. Most of the trees include shorea, teak and tualang trees. Being the guardian
of the forest, tualang trees are also the tallest trees here.
There are also three types of hornbills found in the jungles of Langkawi. They are the
Great Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill and Wreathed Hornbill. Visitors will also be able to
see the dusky leaf monkeys. These monkeys are the most docile ones in the jungles here.
There is also opportunity for visitors to spot micro bats. These bats are found under the
leaf of the palm tree. These creatures are sensitive and can die from sound pollution.
The guided nature walks are also conducted at night. If this is your choice, remember
to carry torchlights. Morning nature walks are from 8.00 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. and night walks
are from 7.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. The fee is RM85 per person and this includes fee for the
guide and transport from the hotel.

HOLIDAY VOLUNTEER PROJECT
During the last school holidays, I participated in a gotong royong at a beach. It was
scheduled to begin early one Saturday morning. I joined other eager volunteers who were
waiting at Pantai Pasir for the clean up to start.
The organisers divided us into groups and assigned each of us a task. I grabbed a big
black garbage bag and started collecting the rubbish on the beach. I found things I never
thought I would find at the beach such as diapers, toys and building materials. The other
volunteers and I worked diligently and after several hours we had collected ten large bags
of rubbish. I felt sad that people were so irresponsible and did not think of cleaning up
after themselves.
After a short rest and a quick meal, we hiked up Bukit Pasir for more work. However,
this time we were not cleaning up but expanding a community garden. Some of us dug
holes and planted seeds while others made trellises. Later, we cut two trees so the garden
could get more sunlight. Then, we hung cans around the garden. The noise the cans
made when the wind blew would scare away the monkeys.
Once our garden work was completed, we walked back and gathered at the beach. The
organisers thanked us for our help. I chatted with some of the volunteers for a while. After
that, my father came to take me home.

脖子往里张望。轿车旁边一位身穿名牌西服的男人焦急地对大伙喊:
“你们谁帮我爬进车底拧一下螺丝啊?”
原来他的车油箱出了问题,从度假村游玩出来,漏出来的油已经漏
到车身外,这里最近的加油站也有上百公里,难怪他急得像热窝上的
蚂蚁。
他身旁打扮妖艳的女人说:“看你急成这样,别担心,重赏之下,
必有勇夫!”听女人这么说,他赶紧掏出一张百元大钞:“谁帮我拧紧,
这钱就是他的了!”
我身边的小伙伴动了一下,却被他的同伴拉住了:“有钱人的话,
信不得的!”这时只见一个小孩走了过去,说:“我来吧。”
操作很简单,小孩在那人的指挥下不到一分钟就拧好了,爬出来后
他就用期待的眼神看着那人,男人刚想把那百元钞票递给小孩,却被
女人呵斥住了:“你还真打算给他 100 元啊?给他五元已经够多了!”
男人从女人手里接过零钱递给小孩,小孩摇了摇头。听见人群中的
嘘声,男人又加了五块,小孩还是摇头,男人有些生气了:“你嫌少?
再嫌少,这十块钱也不给你啦。”
“不,我没有嫌少,我的老师说,帮人是不要报酬的!”
男人糊涂了:“那你怎么还不走?”
