UMRAH(STEP BY STEP)

Click here for the rules and more details of Hajj and Umrah. For just the procedure to perform the ritescorrectly, read the following description.

In this article the procedure to wear Ihram and to perform the rites of Hajj and Umrah are presented in a simplified way. Also included is the procedure to visit the Holy Prophet

(puh!"s #om and his $os%ue.

1. IHRAM

#he literal meaning of Ihram is to ma&e haraam (foridden!. 'hen a haji pronounces the

Niyyah (intention! of Hajj and Umrah and utters #aliyah, certain halaal (permissile! things

ecome haraam for him. #his comined action (iyyah and #aliyah! is called Ihram. #he

two sheets that a haji wears are figuratively &nown as Ihram ut the real Ihram is iyyah )

#aliyah. If someone wears these two sheets and does not declare his intention and utter

#aliyah, he does not ecome a Muhrim. #hat is why, efore iyyah and #aliyah, he can

cover his head during two rakahs of Nafl , an act which is not allowed in the real state of

Ihram.

PROCEDURE

*. Preparations for Ihram. +om your hair, shape the eard, trim your

mustache, cut your nails, and remove unwanted ody hair.

. Prification. #a&e a ath with the intention of Ihram otherwise do

wudu. Here it is noted that there are two ways of purification-

o Internal purification, sincere repentance on your sins. ay

something li&e this- /0 Allah, I sincerely repent on my sins and

see& your forgiveness./

1. Ihram !heets. $en should wear a sheet of white cloth around the

waist and cover the upper ody with the other sheet. 'omen"s ordinaryclothes are their Ihram. 2oth should wear the flip3flops (hawai

chappal ! so that the middle ones of the upper part of the feet are not

covered.

4. "afl !alah. If it is not makruh (undesirale! time, offer two ra&ahs of

nafl for Ihram y covering your heads.

5. A#$ice. If going to 6eddah y an airplane, it is convenient to get into

the status of Ihram inside the plane. Here is what you do. 7o

everything at home or at the airport e8cept iyyah (intention! and

#aliyah. Have your shower, pray two rakahs of nafl ut you are still

not in the status of ihram ecause you haven"t done the main thing yet,

i.e., intention and #aliyah which is done at or efore the oundary line

called Miqat .

9o to the airplane and sit down with the white sheets on. In a Hajj

flight when you are close to Miqat , the pilot will announce that this is

the order line to ma&e your intention and to say #aliyah. #hose who

did not change their clothes efore should do so now although it is not

convenient inside the plane. Please note that-

o It is a good idea to as& at the time of oarding if the arrival of

Miqat will e announced y the pilot. If not, ma&e your

intention and say #aliyah on your own appro8imately one

hour efore you reach 6eddah.

o If you are flying with a group, follow the instructions of the

group leader.

:. Intention an# %ali'ah. ow uncover your head and declare your

intention. It is assumed that you are performing Hajj al3#ammat"u in

which Umrah is performed first as descried later in the /;inds ofHajj/.

/0 Allah< I intend to perform Umrah. Please ma&e it easy for

me and accept it from me. Amen./

Immediately after that utter the words of #aliyah three times and as

often afterwards as possile. If you don"t rememer it, you can say its

translation in =nglish or in any other language ut #aliah or its

translation is pronounced in a loud voice y men and in a sudued

voice y women.

any dua in Araic or in your own language.

@. Prohiitions of Ihram. After intention and #aliyah, you are in the

status of Ihram and from this time on you should not do acts that are

foridden in Ihram , for e8ample, here are some of the things a muhrim

must not do-

o +over head (men!, cover face (women!

o +over the middle one of the upper part of the feet (2oth menand women!!

o have cut hair

o +ut nails

o 'ear perfume

o 'ear stitched clothing (men! ('omen can wear their ordinay

clothes!

o Hunting &illing

B. Jorne' to)ar#s Makkah. 'hen this sacred journey towards

$a&&ah al3$u&arrama starts, recite #aliyah fre%uently on the way.

#hen enter the city very humly and with great fondness still reciting

#aliyah.

After arranging for your residence, proceed to the Haram harif to perform Umrah.

+I"D! O, HAJJ#here are three ways of performing the Hajj-

Ha-- al%amatt( (Interrupted!

#his is the easiest way of performing Hajj as descried elow.

Ha-- al/iran (+omined!

#his denotes entering into ihram for oth Umrah and Hajj at the same

time, not ta&ing it off until the day of sacrifice at $ina.

In Ciran one has to stic& to the long3lasting restrictions of Ihram

Ha-- alIfra# (ingle!

#his means entering into ihram only for the Hajj and ta&ing it off only

on the day of sacrifice.

HAJJ A0%AMA%%(U

People who come to audi Araia from other countries usually

perform Hajj al3#amatt"u. #he Ihram they wear on or efore

$i%at is for Umrah only and perform Umrah first, then they slip

into their ordinary clothes and on @ Dil Hijjah they put on hram for Hajj at their residence in $a&&ah and perform the rites of

Hajj. It is ta&en off on the day of sacrifice. #his article descries

the procedure to perform Hajj al3#amatt"u.

HO %O PER,ORM UMRAH

$ecca as mentioned aove.

Haram preferaly through 2a

as3alam with right foot first. upplicate to Allah and proceed

towards ;aEah. >ou may recite the following supplication

which is usually used efore entering a mos%ue-

Allah huma aftah li abwabe rahmate ka

1. ,irst !i4ht2 At the first sight of ;aEah, &eep your eyes fi8ed at

2aitullah and standing at one side, it is suggested that you do the

following-

ay Allahu A&ar three times

ay a Ilaha Illallah three times

Proclaim 7arud on our eloved Prophet (peace e upon him!

and very humly and with tears in your eyes supplicate to Allah

for whatever you wish. #his is a special time for the acceptance

of prayers.

#he idea is to praise and glorify your +reator efore proclaiming 7arud and supplications. #herefore, in lieu of

Allahu A&ar and a Ilaha Illallah, you may recite some other

similar holy verses if you so desire.

After this, while uttering #aliyah, move forward to perform #awaf of

;aEah.

%AA, O, UMRAH

#awaf means circling around something . Here it means moving around ;aEah seven times

with e8treme love and devotion.

*. Preparation2 Pass the upper sheet of Ihram from underneath the right

arm and put it on the left shoulder. #his act ares the right shoulder and

is &nown as IGtaa. Alutions (vudu! is essential for tawaf. eciting of

#aliyah is stopped when you reach Hajar3e3 Aswad, the starting point

of tawaf.

. "i''ah 5Intention62 tand in front of ;aEah facing Hajar3e3Aswad

(the 2lac& tone! in such a way that the whole Hajre3e3Aswad is on

your right side. #o achieve this end, you may get help from the lac&

stripe on the floor. #his stripe should e on your right side. #hen

without raising your hands ma&e iyyah (intention! for Umrah-

" % Allah, perform &awaf of 'mrah to please (ou. Make it easy for

me and accept it from me."

1. Istilam2 ow moving towards right, come in front of Hajar3e3Aswad

and &iss it if possile, or touch it with a stic& and &iss the stic& if that

also is not possile, raise your hands to your ears &eeping your open

palms towards Hajre3e3Aswad and say-

" )ismillahi Allahu Akbar *a Lilla +il +amd"

and drop your hands down. ow point the palms of your

hands again towards Hajar3e3 Aswad and &iss them. #his act of

&issing Hajar3e3Aswad or pointing towards it is called Istilam.

4. %a)af !tarts2 After Istilam, turn right and start tawaf counter

cloc&wise.

WARNING

#he authorities often apply perfume to Hajar3e3Aswad, u&n

>amani and $ultaGam. If so, do not touch them while in the

state of Ihram, otherwise a dum will e re%uired as a penalty.

7uring tawaf, it is not permissile to face or turn your ac&

towards ;aEah e8cept when you are &issing or pointing

towards Hajar3e3Aswad.

5. Ramal2 For the first three circuits of #awaf of Umrah and #awaf of

Arrival, men are re%uired to move their shoulders and wal& with %uic&

short steps. #his act is called amal and is unnah. #hey wal&

normally during the remaining four circuits.

:. !pplications of %a)af2 #here are no fi8ed supplications for tawaf ut

there are several recommended supplications listed in the oo&s of Hajj

and Umrah out of which the following supplication is easy to

memoriGe-

"$ubhan!Allah wal!hamdu!lillahi wa la ilaha ill!Allah wa!Allahu

Akbar wa la haula wa la quwwata illa!billah."

If you donEt rememer these words, you may glorify Allah y

repeatedly uttering-

$ubhan Allah,

Al!+amdu lilla,

Allahu Akbar,

La laha llallah, etc.

#he Prophet of Islam (peace e upon him! has said that there are two

&alimahs that are light on tongue and (on the day of judgment! they

weigh heavy on the scale ($iGan! and are li&ed y Allah. #hese

&alimahs are-

$ubhan Allah *abe +amde hi $ubhan Allah +il Aeem (2u&hari,$uslim, #irmiGi!

>ou may also use supplications used in the daily alah or you may

see& forgiveness of Allah and as& Him whatever you wish in your own

language.

?. Hatim2 Hatim is a semi3circular half3uilt portion which was

originally a part of the ;aEah ut which could not e included in the

main structure when the ;aEah was reuilt. It is oligatory to go

around Hatim also while performing tawaf.

@. Rkn 7amani an# its !pplications2 After passing the three corners

of the ;aEah you reach the fourth corner &nown as u&n >amani.

#ouch it with oth hands or with right hand. #here is a eautiful

supplication to e used while wal&ing etween u&n >amani and

Hajar3e3Aswad-

"-abbana atina fid!dunya hasanatan wa fil!akhirati hasanatan wa

qina aabin!nar."

0ur eloved Prophet (peace e upon him! has repeatedly recited thissupplication. #he first circuit is complete when you reach Hajar3e3

Aswad.

B. !e$en Circits2 At Hajar3e3Aswad, start the second circuit y &issing

it or pointing towards it as you started the first circuit, i.e., come in

front of Hajar3e3Aswad, raise oth hands to your ears with open palms

towards it and say-

" )ismillahi Allahu Akbar *a Lillah +il +amd

ow &iss oth palms and drop your hands. After this go around ;aEahas you did efore and similarly complete the seven circuits.

*J. %he En# of %a)af2 At the end of seven circuits, do Istilam of Hajar3e3

Aswad or point towards it eighth time which is unnat $uEa&idah.

Also say-

")ismillahi Allahu Akbar *a Lillah +ill +amd"

**. I8taa ,inishe# 2 ow IGtaa is finished, therefore, you cover your

oth shoulders with upper portion of the Ihram sheet. #his does not

apply to women.

Prophet Araham left his wife HaGrat

Hajra and infant son HaGrat Ismael in

the wilderness of $a&&ah at the

command of Allah. #he mother and son

lived for five days on the food andwater they had when the water was

completely finished. #he mother ran

frantically seven times etween the

hills of afa and $arwah in

search of water for her son. uddenly the fountain of DamGam ooGed miraculously near the

feet of HaGrat Ismael. aEey is included in the rites of Hajj and Umrah to commemorate this

event of search and struggle.

*. Istilam of Ha-areAs)a#. 2efore starting aEey, do Istilam of Hajar3

e3Aswad again the ninth time or point towards it, saying-

")ismillahi Allahu Akbar *a Lillah +il +amad."

ow Proceed towards afa. It is a unnah to e in the state of

alutions during aEey.

(Indeed afa and $arwah are among the igns of Allah.!

After this clim afa to the point from where you can see the ;aEah,

then facing the ;aEah raise your hands in supplication, say Allahu

Akbar three times and recite the following supplication or as& Allahwhatever you wish-

"La ilaha ill!Allahu wahdahu la $harika lahu, lahul!mulku wa lahul!

hamdu wa 2ala kulli shaiin 3adeer."

If you donEt rememer this, you may use the supplication recited

earlier during #awaf-

")ismillahi Allahu Akbar *a Lillah +ill +amd"

1. Procee# to)ar#s Mar)ah. +ome down from afa and move towards$arwah while reciting this supplication-

"$ubhan!Allah wal!hamdu!lillahi wa la ilaha ill!Allah wa!Allahu

Akbar wa la haula wa la quwwata illa!billa."

If you donEt rememer this supplication also, recite $ubhan Allah,

Alhamdu Lillah, Allahu Akbar repeatedly and &eep moving. >ou may

also praise Allah and as& for His mercy in your language or use

supplications ta&en from the daily alah. 'hen you reach two green

pillars etween which men have to run ut the women wal& with theirnormal pace.

4. At Mar)ah. 'hen on top of marwah, praise Allah facing the ;aEah

and repeat the same supplications that were recited at afa. 0ne trip is

over, second trip will e on afa and third trip will e on $arwah.

5. En# of !a;e'. In the same way, the seventh trip will end at $arwah. In

all trips the men will run etween the green pillars ut the women will

wal& in a normal way.

:. %)o raka;at "afl. If it is not an undesirale /Makrooh0 time, offer twora&aEats of nafl in the al3Haram.

?. !ha$in4 or clippin4 of hair. After aEey, men should get their heads

completely shaved or get their hair clipped to the length of the upper

third of their finger or a little more. 2oth shaving and clipping are

permissile for men, though shaving is preferale. 'omen are,

however, allowed to have a loc& of their hair clipped. #hey are

foridden to shave their heads.

@. Umrah is complete. After cutting the hair, umrah is complete. #he

restrictions of Ihram are finished. ow wear your everyday clothes andlead a normal life. 2e than&ful to Allah that He provided the

opportunity for performing Umrah and lead rest of your life according

to the commands of your +reator.

>ou may perform Umrah as often as you want according to the aove procedure. And if you

want to perform just a nafl #awaf, follow the same procedure, however, in a nafl #awaf thereis no Ihram, no amal, no IGtaa and even no aEey.

Prohiitions of

Ihram

ow the prohiitions of Ihram start. ecall their detail and

follow the rules. From this point on men cannot cover their

heads for the duration of Ihram.

Departre to

Mina

After the sunrise proceed towards $ina. 0n the way,

pronounce #aliyah as often as you can and also utter other

supplications. 2ut it is o& to follow the procedure of your

Muallim who usually arranges for hajis to leave for $inaduring the night after sha prayers.

In Mina

In $ina offer 6uhar , Asr , Maghrib and sha prayers. pend

that night in $ina and on B Dil Hijjah, offer 4a5r prayer

there.

Isha Pra'ers

In $uGdalifah offer $aghri and Isha prayers

together at Isha time. For oth prayers there is oneadhan and one iqamah.

• First offer Fard prayer of $aghri with

jama"at. #hen say #a&ir #ashri% and

#aliyah.

• Immediately after that offer Fard prayer of

Isha with jama"at.

• After this offer two unnah of $aghri.

• #hen offer two unnah of Isha followed y

'itr prayer.

• 0ffering afl prayer is optional.

:ikr an# D(a

#his is a very lessed night in which glorify Allah,

recite 7arud harif, read Curan, utter #aliyah and

supplicate very humly. Also ta&e some rest.

days and seventy if for four days.

,a-r Pra'er an# a9f At the Fajr time after two ra&ah unnah, offer Fard

prayer with jama"at. then perform wa%uf.

In $ina, hit 6amrah A%aah with seven peles one after the

other. 0n account of ris& to life, the old, wea& or sic& persons

can perform ami a little efore sunset or at night.

!top %ali'ah

top saying #aliyah when you throw the first pele. Also

don"t stop for du"a. 6ust go to your residence and do 3urbani

(animal sacrifice!.

!acrifice6

#here are three days designated for qurbani, i.e., *J, ** or *

Dil Hijjah. It can e done any time during day or night. It is

usually easy to sacrifice an animal on ** Dil Hijjah. 7o

%urani yourself or as& a reliale person to do it for you.

Hal9 or /asr After %urani men should preferaly get their whole head

shaved (Hal%! ut it is permissile to cut the hair (Casr! of

their whole head e%ual in length to a joint of a finger (aout

an inch!. It is also permissile to cut the hair (aout an inch!

of one fourth of the head. A woman is prohiited to shave her

head. he can cut aout an inch long hair of one fourth of her

head. 2ut according to some scholars it is sufficient for awoman to have a loc& of her hair clipped.

• If the sacrifice is postponed till the ne8t two days,

Hal% or Casr is also postponed ecause it comes after

the sacrifice.

• Hal% or Casr can e done at any time up to the * of

Dil Hijjah even if the sacrifice is not postponed. After

Hal% or Casr all prohiitions of Ihram are lifted

e8cept the private relations etween husand andwife which are permissile after #awaf3e3Diarah.

• Hal% or Casr in $ina is a unnah. 2ut you are

allowed to do it anywhere in Haram. If done outside

the precincts of Haram, it re%uires a 7am.

• >ou have to ma&e sure that ami, sacrifice and

shaving or clipping of the hair are performed in the

order in which they are listed otherwise a 7am is

re%uired as a penalty.

%a)afe:iarat

ow perform #awaf3e3Diarat. It can e performed any time,

day or night, from *J Dil Hijjah to the sunset of * Dil

Hijjah. Usually it is convenient to do it on ** Dil Hijjah. Its

procedure is similar to that of #awaf of Umrah and it is

essential that you have performed wudu. According to

unnah this tawaf is to e performed after ami, sacrifice

and shaving or clipping of the hair, and every effort should

e made to do that, ut the Fard stands discharged even if

#awaf3e3Diarat is performed prior to all these practices. As

mentioned earlier, Hal% or Casr after Curani lifts all the

prohiitions of Ihram ut the private relations etween man

and wife are permitted only after this #awaf.

!a(e' of Ha--

After this perform a"ey. Its procedure is the same as that of

a"ey of Umrah. It is a unnah to ma&e sure that your wudu

is intact

Retrn to Mina eturn to $ina when a"ey is done and spend the night there.

#hrow seven peles on each of three 6amarat after awal

(decline of the sun!. ami is usually easy a little efore

sunset and at night. And it is permissile to do ami at

night if there is a ris& to life.

#hrow seven peles at 6amrah 0olah. #hen move a little

forward. And with your hands raised and facing 3ibla, praise Allah and recite Araic du"as or supplicate in your

own words. #here are no prescried du"as.

!pplicate

After this throw seven peles at 6amrah 'ustah. Here

too facing Cilah, praise Allah and earnestly see& his

mercy and lessings. o particular du"a is prescried here

either.

Do not spplicate

#hen throw seven peles on 6amrah A%aah. 2ut this

time do not supplicate at all, after -ami just return to your

place.

If you could not do #awaf3e3Diarah yesterday, do it todayand return to $ina for overnight stay.

:ikr an# Ia#ah

At your residence, recite Curan, glorify Allah, repent on

your sins, and see& forgiveness. As& Allah whatever you

want and don"t commit any sin.

1* :il Hi--ah,ifth Da' of Ha--

Rami of

Jamrarat

#hrow seven peles on each of three 6amarat after awal

ac& to your residence without any du"a.

If you could not do #awaf3e3Diarah earlier, it is essential to

do it today efore Maghrib.

Option

After today"s ami, you have the option to return to

$a&&ah efore sunset. 2ut if the sun sets efore you are

ale to depart, remain in $ina for the third night and

throw peles the ne8t day in the same order.%a)afei#a After Hajj, when you intend to return to your country from

$a&&ah, it is *a5ib (oligatory! to perform &awaf!e!*ida

(Farewell #awaf!. Its procedure is the same as that of a

afl #awaf.

@I!I%I"3 MADI"AH5A Jorne' of 0o$e6

$agnificent Kiew of #he Prophet"s $os%ue

#o visit $adinah is not a Hajj or Umrah rite, ut the uni%ue merits of the ProphetEs city, his

$os%ue and his sacred tom attract every pilgrim to visit it. #here is no Ihram nor taliyahfor the visit to $adinah or the ProphetEs $os%ue.

Uni9e Merit of the Prophet;s Mos9e. #he Prophet (peace e upon him! himself

participated in the construction of this mos%ue, called it /$y $os%ue/ and led prayers in it

for years. He has also said that a salah performed in the ProphetEs $os%ue is etter than a

thousand salats in any other place e8cept $asjid al3Haram in $a&&ah.

According to HaGrat Anas, the Prophet (peace e upon him! has also said-

"&he person who offers 78 prayers consecutively in my Mosque, without missing a prayer in

between, will secure immunity from the fire of +ell and other torments and also fromhypocrisy." ($usnad Ahmad!

@isitin4 the Hol' %om. It is a great privilege for the pilgrims to visit our eloved ProphetEs

tom. #he Prophet (peace e upon him! once said-

"&he person who comes solely for the purpose of

paying a visit to my grave, has a right on me that

should intercede for him." (LIlm al3Fi%h, Kol. K!

And he has also said-

"&he person who performs +a55 and then visits my

&omb, will be regarded as though he had seen me in

my worldly life." (2aiha%i!

PROCEDURE %O @I!I% MADI"AH

*. %ra$el to Ma#inah an# "i''ah. 'hen you start travel to $adinah,

$a&e niyyah (intention! as such-

" % Allah1 start 5ourney to visit the holy tomb of 9rophet Muhammad

/peace be upon him0. 9lease accept it from me."

7uring this journey, recite 7arud harif fre%uently. 'hen the city of

$adinah is in sight, show your e8treme fondness and e8citement and

humly enter the city while reciting #arud and $alam.

. Mas-i#e"a$i. After putting your luggage at your residence, ta&e a

ath or perform alutions /vudu0, wear nice dress, apply perfume and

proceed towards the ProphetEs $os%ue while uttering #arud.

@. In front of the sacred tom of #he Holy Prophet (peace e upon him!,

there are three sections of rass screens and all three have holes in

them. oo& at the picture carefully. If you stand in front of the middle

section etween the pillars, you"ll see a ig round hole on your left.

#his is in front of the face of the Holy Prophet. Adjacent to it is a door

that stays closed. ight after it on the right side is a round hole which

is in front of the face of Hadrat Au 2a&r iddi%ue. 0n the right of it,there is another round hole which is in front of the face of Hadrat Umar

Faroo%.

in this life and the life after death. >oumay use the same supplication recited

B. Offer !alam of others. ow offer salam of relatives or friends in your own language or say-

"Asslamu alaika ya -asul Allah min!!!!."
