    IntroDUctIon

    The Green Building Index is an environmental rating sstem or buildings developed b PAM (Pertubuhan Arkitek

    Malasia / Malasian Institute o Architects) and ACEM (the Association o Consulting Engineers Malasia). The

    Green Building Index is Malasias rst comprehensive rating sstem or evaluating the environmental design and

    perormance o Malasian buildings based on the six (6) main criterias o Energ Ecienc, Indoor Environment

    Qualit, Sustainable Site Planning & Management, Materials & Resources, Water Ecienc, and Innovation.

    The Green Building Index is undamentall derived rom existing rating tools, including the Singapore Green

    Mark and the Australian Green Star sstem, but extensivel modied or relevance to the Malasian tropical

    weather, environmental context, cultural and social needs.

    This GBI initiative aims to assist the building industr in its march towards sustainable development. The GBI

    environmental rating sstem is created to:

    Defne reen uildin y estalisin a oon lanuae and standard o easureent;

    Proote interated, wole-uildin desin;

    Reonise and reward environental leadersip;

    Transor te uilt environent to redue te environental ipat o developent; and

    Ensure new uildins reain relevant in te uture and existin uildins are reurised and

    tereater sustained properly to reain relevant.

    GSB encourages all members o Project Teams, Building owners, Developers and other interested parties

    (including Contractors, Government and Design and Build Contractors) to use the Green Building Index to

    validate environmental initiatives o the design phase o new non-residential construction or base non-residential

    building reurbishment; or construction and procurement phase o non-residential buildings. Use o the Green

    Building Index is encouraged on all such projects to assess and improve their environmental attributes.

    Use o the Green Building Index (Non-Residential) tool without ormal certication b an independent accredited

    GBI Certier does not entitle the user or an other part to promote the Green Building Index rating achieved.

    No ee is paable to GSB or such use, however ormal recognition o the Green Building Index rating - and the

    right to promote same - requires undertaking the ormal certication process oered b GSB.

    All Green Building Index rating tools are reviewed annually; please forward any feedback to

    [email protected].

    wHo cAn Use tHe Green BUILDInG InDeX?

    wHAt Is tHe Green BUILDInG InDeX (GBI)?

    Complete the Building Input worksheet as the buildings tpe and location ma aect the predicted rating.

    Complete the remaining worksheets b reviewing each credit in each categor and entering the number o

    points ou predict the building will achieve in the No. o Points Achieved column. Calculators are provided

    or a number o the tools credits.

    Enter an points that ma be achieved but need to be conrmed in the Points to be Conrmed column.

    Enter an comments required in the Comments column.

    The predicted rating is shown in the Summar worksheet. More detail on point scores (both achieved and

    those to be conrmed) are shown in the Credit Summar and Graphical Summar worksheets at the end o

    the tool.

    1) Perorm a building fush out b suppling outdoor air to provide not less than 10 airchanges/hour or atleast 30 minutes operation and continuous minimum 1 ACH or the next 14 das, OR

    2) I low VOC materials and low ormaldehde composite wood are used, then building fush out can beperormed b suppling outdoor air to provide not less than 10 airchanges/hour or at least 15 minutes,OR

    3) Conduct IAQ testing to demonstrate maximum concentrations or pollutants are not exceededaccording to the Indoor Air Qualit Code o Malasia.

    Provide or the assessment o comort o the building occupants:

    1) Conduct an occupanc comort surve o building occupants. This surve should collect anonmousresponses about thermal comort, visual comort and acoustic comort in a building. It should includean assessment o overall satisaction with thermal, visual and acoustic perormance and identication othermal-related, visual-related and acoustic-related problems, AND

    2) Develop a plan or corrective action i the surve results indicate that more than 20% o occupants aredissatised with the overall comort in the building. This plan should include measurement o relevantenvironmental variables in problem areas.

    The relevant environmental variables include:

    Temperature, relative humidity, air speed and mean radiant temperature,Lighting level and glare problem,Background noise level,Odour problem, CO

    2level, VOCs, and particulate concentration
