[Time suggested : 15 minutes]

Answer all questions in this paper.

The text below is an article about Comedogenics.Question 1

Read the text below. The first and last lines are correct. For the remaining lines, there is one grammatical error in each line.Write one word to correct the error in the space provided. An example has been given. The correct word must not change the meaning of the sentence. There are no spelling and punctuation errors in this text.

Sugar was a form of carbohydrates, and carbohydrates are good for

you as long as you eat the right kinds (a) but in the right amounts.

Avoid refined processed sugar whenever possible. Foods baked (b)

without white sugar, such as cookies and cakes, and prepackaged

foods such as soda or candy (c) is often the culprits behind a sugar

rush. The reason people reach for sugary foods (d) are the instant

energy boost (e) I receive from simple sugars, meaning sugars that

break down quickly to be converted into energy. Increased energy,

alertness (f) but giddinesshave all been associated with the upswing

(g) an sugar rush. Unfortunately, the initial stages of a sugar rush do

not last. The energy (h) to simple sugars (i) cannot last from 15 to

40 minutes, and once it's gone you feel even more tired than you

were before you (j) eat. The sugary food took energy to digest,

meaning you are left with less energy than before you ate.

Read the following text. Then, answer questions (a) – (j).

Chocolate gets right to the heart of love by increasing the brain’s level of serotonin, the feel-

good brain chemical. Serotonin plays a major role in positive mood, emotional health, proper sleep

and balanced appetite, contributing to numerous behavioral and physiological functions. Decreased

serotonin is a well-known factor in cases of depression. Women have more serotonin in their

systems than men and appear to be more sensitive to chocolate. Chocolate provides a mood boost

to women during PMS and menstruation, when serotonin levels are often down. It also puts women

in the mood for love. Men and women with depleted serotonin levels demonstrate increased

aggressive.Violence, aggressive behaviors, and higher rates of suicide have all been associated with

reduced brain levels of serotonin. Chocolate’s serotonin elevating activity helps to modify mood in

positive ways. These serotonin-related effects enhance the sense of closeness between two people.

Probably the most influential love compound in chocolate is PEA, phenethylamine. This chemical,

which occurs in chocolate in small quantities, stimulates the nervous system and triggers the release

of pleasurable opium-like compounds known as endorphins. PEA also potentiates the activity of

dopamine, a neurochemical directly associated with the feeling of pleasure. PEA acts as a potent

antidepressant in both sexes and rises during times of falling in love. The giddy, restless feelings that

occur when we are in love are due to a great extent to PEA, which significantly increases in the brain

when you are happy. Some scientists dismiss this notion, claiming that the PEA in chocolate is

metabolized too quickly to produce a significant mood-altering effect, but others disagree. Why else

would chocolate be associated with love and Valentine’s Day?

Question 33D printing

3D printing or also known as desktop fabrication; can form any material that can be obtained from a powder. For creating an object you need a digital 3D-model. You can scan a set of 3D images, or draw it using computer-assisted design or CAD software.

4

Page 5: Form 1 Final Exam 2015

The digital 3D-model is usually saved in STL format and then sent to the printer. The process of "printing" a three-dimensional object is done layer-by-layer.

One of the most important applications of 3D printing is in the medical industry. With 3D printing, surgeons can produce mock-ups of parts of their patient's body which needs to be operated upon. Prosthetic limbs, custom hearing aids and dental fixtures can be printed out. The technology is now being used to create more complex structures — particularly human tissue. Schools can benefit from it too because it provides teachers with 3 dimensional visual aids that they can use in their classroom particularly in illustrating a hard to grasp concept. 3D printers make it easy for teachers to seize the interest of their students compared to just showing the pictorial representations of objects. It enhances hands-on learning and learning by doing. It provides more room for interactive class activities. In biology, for instance, teachers can create a 3D model of the human heart, head and even skeleton to teach students about the human body.

On March 29, 2014, ten 3D printed houses, each measuring 200 square meters, appeared in Shanghai, China. The buildings were created entirely out of concrete using a gigantic 3D printer, and each costs only 30,000 RMB ($4,800). It even comes complete with internal and external decorations and was built in only a few days.

3D printers can also print food. Food printers could be used on several occasions. They could for instance improve your kitchen, help astronauts to provide for better meals, and they might as well be useful for soldiers.

Questions (a) – (d) : Based on the schedule, state whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE.

(a) 3D printing does not exist. ______________ (1 mark)

(b) We can build anything with a 3D printer. ______________ (1 mark)

Eating well plays a big part in enhancing physical performance, but did you know certain food choices can also enhance brain function? If your memory needs a boost, or your concentration is letting you down, maybe it's time to reassess what you’re eating?

Complex carbohydrates provide a slow release of glucose to the brain – the only sugar the brain can absorb. Glucose is required to fuel the brain cells that are responsible for concentration, memory and learning. Good sources of complex carbohydrates include wholegrain breads, oats, brown rice, legumes, fruits and vegetables.

Egg yolks are not only a great source of protein; the yolk also contains the memory-promoting nutrient choline. Choline is a key component of two molecules in the brain: phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin. These two molecules account for a high percentage of the brain's total mass, making choline vitally important for brain function. For maximum health benefits include up to two eggs in your diet, three to four times a week.

Coffee does more than just wake you up – it also boosts your brain power. Research shows coffee improves memory and speeds up reaction times by acting on the brain's prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for short-term memory. A lifetime of coffee consumption has even been associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease, a brain disease affecting memory, thought and language. So enjoy your morning cup of joe, knowing it’s doing your brain good.

Fish contains high levels of the fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). EPA acts like an anti-inflammatory in the body, and also helps to prevent blood clotting, which can trigger a heart attack or stroke. DHA is concentrated in large amounts in the brain and is now considered a vital nutrient to enhance learning ability and mental development. Fish that contain the highest levels of fatty acids include tuna, mackerel, salmon, trout and sardines.

Your brain is made up of approximately 75 per cent water, therefore staying hydrated is absolutely vital for optimum brain performance. Health professionals believe the number one cause of memory loss, at any age, is dehydration and the simple act of drinking a large glass of water can dramatically improve brain function. Tip: start the day hydrated and get into the habit of drinking a glass of water first thing upon waking then again as soon as you get to school.

Cacao is chocolate in its purest form, free from sugar, dairy and other processed ingredients. It’s considered a superfood since it contains huge amounts of antioxidants, as well as a compound called epicatechin. Scientists are now discovering the combination of exercise and a diet high in epicatechin promotes functional changes in a part of the brain that supports learning and memory.
