Taiwan-based Edimaxcontinues its push towardsthe protable consumer zoneater making its rounds in theenterprise networking space atertwo decades. Landing on ourlaps recently is the BR-6258n, aversatile networking device whichdoubles up as an AP client or aportable router to help you share

 your Internet pipe with multipledevices.

Although the “nano” descriptionwas a dead giveaway, we werenevertheless amazed at how smallthe 802.11n-compliant router is.Yes, it’s small enough to t intothe palm o your hand. Designedwith portability in mind, Edimax’slatest travel router is wonderullymobile, but dressed ratheruncharacteristically in bright red.

The BR-6258n espouses ewinterace slots to minimize, mainly with the 10/100 LANport dressed in yellow and WAN

port in blue. Don’t expect to ndGigabit connectivity beneath itslittle red hood though. Instead oa conventional DC adapter, theBR-6258n is powered by USB,undoubtedly a handy solutionwhich makes the device lessreliant on power sockets during

your travels. Alternatively, a 3-pinpower cable with a USB outlet isprovided i a PC or notebook isn’tavailable.

The router sports a clean webUI with active tabs showing up inred. While it doesn’t oer the ull-fedged capabilities o a desktoprouter, the BR-6258n does carryadequate eatures such as porttriggering, static routing, advancedWiFi settings, QoS, DDNS, UPnPand WPS. Upon urther checks,we discovered the routersupports channel bonding too.You can enable the 40MHz optionunder the advanced wirelessconguration page.

To transorm the BR-6258ninto its AP Bridge or UniversalRepeater mode, simply selectthe appropriate option rom thewireless setting’s drop list. Youcan also backup the router’scongurations into a convenient“cong.bin” le i required. Wealso must note that the devicetakes about a minute to rereshitsel ater saving any systemmodication. For users with older

wireless adapters, we observedthat the BR-6258n supports mixedBGN mode as well.

As an AP, the router excelled atclose proximities (2 meters) withmeasured 802.11n downlink anduplink throughputs o 56Mbpsand 64Mbps respectively. Transerrates were passable, requiring2 minutes and 43 seconds tocomplete a 1GB transer. However, long range communicationevidently isn’t the gadget’s strongsuit with throughputs dipping to7Mbps and 4Mbps at the 25-meterspot.

In summary, Edimax has

created a compact and aordablenetworking solution with the BR-6258n that’s excellent value ormoney. I you preer a travel 3Grouter instead, Edimax also oersthe 3G-6218n which supportsmost 3G and 3.5G USB donglesaccording to the Taiwanese rm.
