the south China Seas. Mount Kinabalu, which the city is
named after, is located to its the east.
Kota Kinabalu is often referred to as KK in both Malaysia
and internationally. It is a major fishing destination and a
popular getaway for travelers visiting Sabah and Borneo.
Kota Kinabalu is a major industrial and commercial center
in East Malaysia, making it one of the fastest growing
cities in Malaysia.
LanguageAlmost 50% of Kota Kinabalu residents are of Chinese
descent. The main dialect spoken by Kota Kinabalu’s
Chinese community is Hakka but Mandarin and Cantonese
are also widely understood and spoken. Apart from the
Sabahans’ very own diverse mother tongues, their national
language Bahasa Malaysia and English are widely spoken.
Explore Kota Kinabalu ContinuesMari Mari Cultural VillageA must-see village representing Sabah’s five major ethnic tribes: Kazdazandusun, Bajau, Murut, Rungus and Lundayeh. This authentic village, located in the town of Inanam, showcases the lifestyle, culture and traditions of Sabah’s people. Visitors can take part in demonstrations of local arts, fire making and cooking.
Lok Kawi Wildlife ParkThis majestic wildlife park provides guests with a look into the diverse wildlife in the Sabah region. Amidst the animals exhibited are the Borneo pygmy elephants, orangutans and Sumatran rhinoceros, along with a wide variety of colorful birds. The park consists of two components, zoological and botanical. While the zoological component offers a view of the inhabitants of the zoo, the botanical component allows guests to go jungle trekking on trails throughout the wildlife park.
Tanjung Aru If you’re looking for the perfect place to relax and unwind, Tanjung Aru is an ideal beach location to enjoy the golden sunset with a cool sea breeze. Located at the end of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, this wonderful beach takes its name from the casuarinas or aru trees in the sand. CurrencyThe unit of currency in Malaysia is the Malaysian Ringgit
(RM). Travelers’ cheques and foreign currencies can be
changed for Malaysian Ringgit at banks and few hotels.
There are also money-exchanging kiosks available at major
shopping complexes and in town with better rates than
at the airports. Please note, most major hotels charge a
conversion fee.
Using Credit Cards
Credit cards are widely accepted throughout Malaysia.
The most widely accepted are Visa, MasterCard, American
Express and Diners Club. Please make sure to keep
photocopies of all of your credit cards and documents in
case of theft or loss. Also, make sure to check with your
bank to see if your credit card is valid overseas and alert
your home bank of your travel plans.
Cultural NotesThere are currently 32 officially recognized ethnic groups in
Sabah with the largest non-indigenous ethnic group being
the Chinese and the largest indigenous group being the
Kadazan-Dusun people. Two other larger ethnic groups in
Sabah are the Bajau and Murut. Compared to other states
in the country, Sabah has a relatively small population of
Indians and South Asians.
In Sabah, people greet each other by saying “selamat
datang” and thank each other by saying “terima kasih”
with a smile. Due to religious reasons, some people prefer
not to have physical contact with others. However, a
handshake is a generally acceptable greeting.
It’s customary to remove shoes before entering a
mosque as well as homes. In places of worship, visitors
are required to dress modestly. Avoid pointing your
index finger at others, as this is considered rude in the
local custom.
