Study with the champions!
This summer has proven a very successful
one for Germany - not only in terms of winning the Football World Cup for the fourth time, but also with regards to its political, economic, and
social development in general. "This could be the start of a century of German success" states a recent article in Newsweek. Very
sinificant for Germany's success story is the ongoing internationalisation. Just like theGerman football team owes the championship
to players of Polish, Turkish, Tunesian, and Ghanaian descent, Germany as a whole profitsimmensely from the fact that the country has opened up to international talents in order to meet
the challenges of globalization. Be part of this success story - and study in Germany!

Malaysian higher education meets German universities at DAAD-network conference in Bonn, Germany
Every two years, the DAAD invites representatives from German universities to meet the DAAD-network. With its 15
regional offices and 55 information centres, DAAD offers considerable global expertise on higher education systems world-wide. The DAAD-network conference makes this
expertise available to the German universities. In July this year, almost 100 German universities sent representatives to the DAAD headquarter in Bonn to talk about opportunities
for internationalization. The DAAD Information Centre Kuala Lumpur provided information on opportunities for German universities in Malaysia.
On behalf of Education Malaysia and the Malaysian Ministry of Education, Malaysian higher education was present at the
conference with a prominently placed booth where Mr. Aw Yoke Cheng offered information on study and research in Malaysia. The Malaysian presence was very remarkable
because it was one of the first countries sending an own representative to present its higher education system onthis conference. The Malaysian booth drew strong attention
from the German universities and helped a lot to present Malaysia as an important player in global higher education.
Ms. Norlis Simaa Mohd Ali has recently joined our team in DAAD Information Centre
Kuala Lumpur. Norlis studied in Germany and graduated with Dipl.-Ing. (FH) in Building Services Engineering from the University of
Applied Sciences Nuremberg, Germany.
Norlis, why did you choose the course in
Building Service Engineering?
Germany is really working hard towards
green technology – biofuel, recycling, renew-able energy etc. This really suits my field of interest. Let’s make the world greener!
Why do you work with DAAD now?
Germany offers so many opportunities for research and study purposes. Studying in Germany is a whole new and exciting
experience – and I want more Malaysian
New colleague at DAAD Information Centre KLstudents to have the same exciting
and challenging experience I had during my studies.
What do you think about studying in
Germany?
Universities in Germany enjoy high reputation all over the world. And most of the public universities charge no or only
moderate tuition fees. As Germany has become a popular destination for inter-national students, it is a great chance to
make new friends and of course learn about a new culture and also learn a new language. One will be spoiled by the vast choices of
cultural and leisure time offers!

New testcenter for TestAS and TestDaF at UKM
Since 2003, the Mercator Office at the Faculty of Engineering of Universiti Kebangsaan
Malaysia (UKM) serves as a liaison office for the collaboration between UKM and the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. Now the Mercator office is licensed as testcenter for TestAS and TestDaF. Interested
candidates can take these two exams at UKM now.
What is TestAS?
TestAS (Test for Academic Studies) is a standardized aptitude test for international applicants who want to provide evidence of their capability
to enter universities in Germany. Each TestAS examination comprises an Online Language Test, a Core Test and a Subject Specific Module. When registering, candidates choose one of the four Subject Specific Modules:
· Humanities, Cultural Studies and Social Sciences
· Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences· Engineering· Economics
Many universities in Germany use the results of TestAS to select students for their study
programmes. Please find more information on the TestAS and test dates at www.testas.de.
What is TestDaF?
TestDaF is an advanced level language exam for foreign learners of German who plan to study in Germany. Its results are acknowledged by
German universities as proof of the required linguistic qualification to study at any German university. For more information please check www.testdaf.de.
What else does the Mercator Office offer?
Besides TestAS- and TestDaF-exams, Mercator Office at UKM offers German Language Courses. The courses are designed as blended
courses, combining language training
with technical language to prepare candidates for engineering programmes in Germany. In addition, Mercator Office also offers an Intercultural Communication Course. This course
of 25 hours provides information on intercultural matters and on structures of the German higher education system. It is thus an excellent preparation for studies in Germany.
Next TestAS: 04 March, 2015; registration from 10 November 2014 - 19 January 2015
Next TestDaF: 10 February, 2015; registration from 18 November 2014 - 13 January 2015

UM-students enjoy the German experience
In early September, 11 students of the BA-programme
'German with Education' and one academic teacher of the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics of UM had the opportunity to travel to Germany for two weeks for a study
and cultural visit. The study trip was sponsored and organized by DAAD. Its main tasks were to expose the students to academic settings of German as a Foreign
Language in Germany and to introduce them to the history and culture of Germany.
The group visited leading university institutes for German as a Foreign Language in Jena, Leipzig and Bielefeld and
discussed current trends in
German language teaching with German academics and German and international students.
Cultural visits lead the students to Weimar, Berlin and Frankfurt am Main.
In September, Jessica Heintges has joined the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics (FBL) of University Malaya (UM) as new
DAAD-sponsored visiting language teacher. Jessica studied Applied Linguistics, Literary and Cultural Studies, and Economics at
Technical University Dortmund, Germany. Here, she also gained the teaching certificate in German as a Foreign Language. During
her studies, she interned with a high school
New DAAD teaching staff at University of Malaya
and media stations in the US, taught German
in language programmes of the German parliament (the Bundestag) and worked as
editor for German TV.
After gaining her Master’s degree, for which she researched and taught at the German
Department of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, she taught German in integrational
classes for migrants in Dortmund, Germany.
As visiting language teacher at UM Jessica supports the two BA German programmes at
FBL. For one year she teaches German language and culture and coordinates projects with the DAAD Information Centre
Kuala Lumpur and the German Embassy. Jessica's teaching position is supported by DAAD with funds from the German Federal
Ministry of Education and Research.

Was machen Sie jetzt?
Was gefällt Ihnen in Deutschland am meisten?
Wahr-

Walls – Part of Our Lives A Photo & Drawing Competition to Remember the Berlin Wall For 28 years, the Berlin Wall divided the German capital. It became the most striking symbol of the confrontation between East and West known as the Cold War. Many innocent people lost their lives trying to flee from Eastern Germany. 25 years ago, in 1989, the Berlin Wall came down in a peaceful revolution. This was one of the most significant political transformations in the 20th century. As we celebrate its “silver jubilee”, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Goethe-Institut Kuala Lumpur are teaming up and inviting you to find an artistic approach to the role that walls play in our everyday lives. Walls can separate and mark a boundary. They can be bare or embellished with flowers. They can have spikes at the top or inviting openings in them. They can also serve as a backdrop for pieces of art or they are pieces of art themselves. So venture out. Push the boundaries of imagination. Show us how walls are a part of our lives.
