The question I asked myself before starting this

project was, “how can I take something simple

(like honey) and create an aesthetic appeal that

honey packaging doesn’t normally have? Then the

idea sparked to pair up with Country Plastics in

Ames and give my industrial design skills a try by

sketching up and having them make custom bottles

for my honey. Although initially I had ideated

some more complex, hexagonal-shaped bottles,

we downsized my ideas to simple 4”x5” bottles

to save time and money, which was more realistic

for my designs to adhere to as well. In the top of

the bottles I asked that a hole be drilled so I could

fill my bottles up and seal with a cork in each top.

I take pride in the fact that not only did I design

the labels that are on the bottles, but indirectly I

had a hand in the bottle design as well to make my

complete project unique.

movie, “Austin Powers.”

The most important lessons I feel like I could take

away from this project were to make sure design

decisions have a reason behind them, or a reason

other than just ‘liking’ it. Also to not be afraid to

think outside the box (or bottle), but make sure

ideas are practical before developing a basis off of

an unrealistic foundation.

Many slang combinations of different languages are present, but English remains the primary language.

Constructed in 1859, Big Ben is the largest 4-faced, chiming clock tower in the world, at 316 feet tall. In a survey in 2008, Big Ben was deemed the most popular landmark in the United Kingdom.

In 1828, Parisians started lighting Champs-Elysèes Avenue with gas lamps, which deemed the city the nickname, “La Ville Lumière,” or the “City of Light.”

Constructed in 72 AD, the Colosseum was home to deadly gladitorial and

wild animal fights. The massive structure had 80 entrances and held

55,000 spectators in its prime. The Colosseum attracts nearly 5 million

visitors every year, making it the most popular monument in Italy.

Built in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was initially only meant to be a temporary addition to Paris’ skyline. It reaches 905 feet off of the ground, and visitors can take an elevator to the top for spectacular views of the city.

I’ll be living in Europe this summer.

My favorite part of this project was the research;

it’s rare that you’ll find me saying that. It goes

to say that the progress is in the process, and I

couldn’t agree more. By being able to pour into

books and articles to inform myself about these

three incredible cities that I’ll find myself standing

in within a few, short months is exciting to say the

least. I was inspired heavily during the beginning

phases of this project by architecture; European

to be exact. Initially I thought that I wanted to

focus on only European architecture, but I was

having a tough time finding both qualitative and

quantitative content that was interesting enough to

stand on its own throughout an entire infographic.

With this realization, I decided to shift my thinking

to include more aspects of a site-seeing excursion

across Europe, hitting three major cities from

North to South; London to Paris to Rome.

The photos being shown are from one article that I

designed this Spring semester for Revival Magazine,

which is a student-run publication at Iowa State

that celebrates art, fashion, music and culture. In

January, I moved up into the position of Design

Director, where my responsibilities have shifted

into a position of authority and decision-making.

One of my main responsibilities is to develop

style guides and oversee all design aspects of the

publication while still getting to design spreads

throughout the issue.

The building I chose to focus on for this project was

Parks Library, mainly because of its aesthetically appealing

architecture along with the sharp contrast and angles that are

created through the incorporation of so many sleek windows,

while still being paired with an older style of brickwork. The

building’s architecture piqued my interest and yielded my

camera with some beautiful and unique photos, as well as

allowing a wide array of different photo opportunities. I chose

the quote by Marshall McLuhan to accompany my design that

reads, “The spoken word was the first technology by which

man was able to let go of his environment in order to grasp it

in a new way.” I feel like this was fitting because my theme

was about Parks Library (hypothetically) ‘going digital,’ which

coincides well with McLuhan’s words about “grasping [Parks

Library’s] environment in a new way.”

I chose to go with sleek and modern-looking sans

serif fonts (Letter Gothic Std & Menlo) for parts

of my text, and I contrasted them with Didot Std

in italic (a beautiful serif font) for most of my

titles because they balance each other out well

throughout my three compositions. I struggled

with finding this balance initially though, with my

main conflict being text size. I played around with

various sizes of my quote and call-to-action text

in all three posters until I finally found a happy

medium with size and weight as well.

ASTRO ENERGY BARS

I decided to create an identity for a hypothtetical

granola bar company, which specializes in ‘energy

bars.’ The aspect that I developed through research

to ensure that my company would differ from

competitors is that instead of basing flavors off of

the ingredients used, Astro creates a dozen bars to

reflect the twelve signs of the zodiac. “Sustained

nutrition aligned with astrology.”

Different elements of this identity project were

to create applications for our company such as

a stationary set which included a letterhead,

an envelope and a business card. We also were

to create some sort of a three-dimensional

application, for which I created a trade show

booth. I developed a horoscope app that’s three

levels deep, as well as the box, wrapper and labels

for the actual granola bars.

The box and label both have cut-out elements,

where I used an X-acto knife to hollow out shapes

to add dimension to my designs.

Personal projects are fun.

This Spring I took on a request from a

good friend of mine who has her own

photography business. Our styles are

compatible which made this such a fun

project to team up on with. The mark I

created is handwritten and she’s currently

using it on her business cards, her website

as well as her watermark for her “sneak

peak” photos.

Handwritten type is my hype.

I’m completely and utterly in love with the

feeling I get when authenticity meets modern;

when handwriting meets photos or text. I’ve

been mainly self-taught, with the help of a

few calligraphy books and articles...but writing

the same word or phrase 50 times in my

sketchbook is usually what does the trick. I’ve

included photos of a few of my recent pieces

I’ve done for fun; as for the image to the

right...I’m well aware that I’m weird.
