Questions 11 – 18 are based on the following text.

“Don’t lose yourself,” the old, bedridden man said. I was four (11) five at the time,

and my family was visiting him. To be honest, I can’t remember (12) name or how we

knew him. But two decades later, his words haunted me as I lay paralysed on my bed and

_ (13) to come to terms with my life. For years, I had suffered from depression. _

(14) first incident I can remember happened when I was fourteen. (15) I walked to my

home in Singapore after school one day, I was overcome with the urge to sit in a corner and

cry. I barely managed to reach our flat before (16) into tears. These overwhelming,

unexplained feelings frightened me. By the time I (17) sixteen, these outburst were

happening about once a month. Most of the time I lived my life normally, but then my mind

seemed to take a life of (18) own. When I was seventeen, I concluded that the only

way to stop my suffering was simply not to feel anything.

Questions 25-28 are based on the following article.

The Importance of Water

Water is necessary to life. Without water, all living things will surely die. We need water for drinking, cooking, washing and cultivating our fields.

No one can survive without drinking water. Every day, we drink litres of water. This sometimes takes the form of soft drinks and soups. Water is often added to dishes when we cook. It is a necessary ingredient.

Farmers use water to cultivate their fields and to provide drinking water for their livestock. It is a precious natural resource and a source of energy. When it is converted into steam, it can be used to operate machines.

Dams are built across rivers not only to generate hydroelectricity but also to create reservoirs

where water is stored to provide for drinking and irrigation.

Since water is so important, we should use it wisely and not waste it.

Questions 29-34 are based on the following dialogue.

Mrs Tee : Girls, I would like to know why so few of you use the library.

Norli : Mrs Tee, the library is just not comfortable. It’s too cramped. There is not

enough space for everyone to sit and read comfortably.

Mrs Tee : I see. What about the rest of you? Why don’t you use the library?

Gayanthri : I find that there are not many varieties of books in the library. There are mainly

reference books with very few storybooks. Some of the books are old while

others are torn and tattered. In fact many of the books are out of date.

Mrs Tee : Are there any other complaints?

Sheryl : Yes, Mrs Tee. The library rules are not enforced. Many students make noise in

the library but the librarians don’t reprimand them. Furthermore, when I want to

Life’s Brief Candle

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools

The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!

Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,

That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,

And then is heard no more; it is a tale

Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,

Signifying nothing.

William Shakespeare

Questions 38 - 40 are based on the extract from the short story Of Bunga Telur and BallyShoes.

“Why so long, Cik?” queried Jamal. He had already spent a few sleepless nights thinking

about his bride.

“Because, dear son,” explained his mother, “there’re the invitations, the catering, the

bridal chamber and the bunga telur to be attended to.” Well, he understood about the invitations,

the catering, yes, the bridal chamber (blush), yes, definitely, but the bunga telur? What was that?

He had not anticipated this bunga telur thing. Jamal needed clarifications on the bunga telur

issue. A bunga telur, his sister explained is the thing, in fact the given thing, hosts presented to

guests on the latter’s leave. These were usually hard-boiled eggs. Well, that’s not really a

problem, thought Jamal. What was wrong with that? One could eat the eggs after the feast.

But, to Jamal’s horror, the bunga telur was only part of the whole scene. Jamal’s mother

demanded certain funds with which to finance the arrangements. Jamal then took to making

budget sheets.

38 From the passage, we know that bunga telur

A must be eaten after the feast

B is a gift from the hosts to the guests

C should consist of a flower and an egg

D is customary in every wedding ceremony

39 From the passage, we know that Jamal

A knows what bunga telur is

B has to prepare bunga telur

C is excited about bunga telur

D is confused about bunga telur

40 Jamal’s mother demanded certain funds with which to finance the arrangements. The sentence suggests that

A Jamal needs to give a certain amount of money for his wedding

B Jamal’s mother does not want to do the arrangements

C Jamal’s mother will pay everything for the wedding

D Jamal must make the arrangements by himself
