Questions 29 – 34 are based on the following passage.

29 Tusks can be made into

A a billiard cue.

B a grand piano.

C an ivory necklace.

D an emerald bracelet.

© 2011 Hak Cipta Jabatan Pelajaran Melaka SULIT

Elephants use tusks for stripping trees, moving objects, fighting and

display. Humans have other uses for tusks which are made of ivory such as

jewellery, piano keys and billiard balls. Although ivory has been valued for

centuries, large scale killing of elephants for ivory did not begin until about

1900. By the 1970s and 1980s, poaching had become a serious problem.

Between 1979 and 1992, the number of elephants plunged from 1.3

million to about 600 000. Elephants were in danger. Those protecting the

elephants chose a simple solution which was to ban the sale of ivory. Hence

the poachers would find it difficult to make a living.

The ban of ivory sales worked. Elephant population grew fast in

southern Africa but they also began to damage crops and chase villagers. This

created a problem for those protecting the wildlife. Angry villagers were

demanding that elephants should be taken away from areas near humans or

even killed. One solution was to let the local people have control of the way the

elephants were managed. But how could you make the villagers want to look

after the elephants?

So the authorities began to allow the sale of ivory as a way for the

villagers to raise money. This gave them an interest in managing the elephants.

In 1998, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered species (CITES)

lifted the ban on all trade in ivory. Money from the sale of African ivory is being

used to help people live alongside elephants.

VP went on and on describing cloning techniques so I decided to press ‘Save’

and listen to it all later. For now I had some serious thinking to do.

I’ll tell you what I was thinking. The BioLab in this ship is very big. It has to be,

because biology is what this trip is all about – the biology of Trion – what lives there

now and what, and who, could live there in the future. At the moment the ship’s BioLab

is deserted. It won’t become busy until we reach Trion.

I need to use it. I need it all to myself. I will make a clone. It will be my perfect friend and companion. Perfect, because I am going to clone myself. Make another me.

We know that music affects us emotionally but not all music moves us equally. A

piece of music that inspires one person can cause irritation and annoyance in another. Music

that we love listening to makes us feel relaxed and gives an impact on us through its melody,

rhythm and beats. On the other hand, musical styles that we dislike will make us feel

displeased and uncomfortable.

Today, there is a growing field of health-care known as “Music Therapy” which uses

music specifically to help with healing. Many hospitals now use music therapy to help patients

cope with pain, fight off depression and promote movement in order for them to get together

and enjoy each other’s company. One of the most interesting recent findings is that a faster

musical beat brings sharper concentration and more alert thinking while a slower tempo

promotes a calmer and more meditative state. When we listen to relaxing music, it will help

us feel less stressed and can help to lower blood pressure and ease muscle tension.

There is no doubt that music offers something to everyone. As the recent studies

seem to show, music can also help and heal too. Music may not be appropriate at every

moment of your day, but you may be surprised by how much difference a dose of the right

music at the right time can make.
