Cutbac9s in the +51's and +55's led to the elimination of many of

Ne! advanced nursing practice roles should be introduced only in response to the health$

The Canadian Nurse ractitioner Initiative includes an

structured, for!ard$loo9ing evaluative approach. In particular, the tool9it

    o=ers guidance on

tailoring the planning, implementation and evaluation of the nurse

uniue reuirements of speci6c practice settings. The design of the tool9it

    population health

    *''e?.

Coordination of the preparation and roles for advanced nursing practice is

another necessary step. The development of educational and e3periential

goals and programs for advanced practice nurses should be aligned

across the provinces and territories, to reinforce their place in health care

overall and to permit labour mobility. The goal must be to ensure that all

Canadians have access to similar types of e3pertise.

To e=ectively develop and sustain the health$care system, the roles of health$care providers,

including advanced practice nurses, must be optimied. Canadians can

    anticipate many ne! chal$

lenges to their health$care system, including increases in chronic diseases

    such as diabetes mellitus

    !hereby clients !ill

become more educated and more strongly engaged and !ill participate more

    actively in developing

    and maintaining their o!n health >illeneuve H ;acDonald, *''?.

    Advanced practice nurses

must be part of the solution to these health$care challenges and the changes

    that lie ahead.

Ne! approaches to health care, based on strategies that !ill enhance

access to service delivery !hile improving the health of the population,

    must be developed collaboratively.
