Sanitary Fittings Inside Toilet Likely To Contribute Smell

1. Water Closet (WC)

2. Urinal Bowl

3. Floor Trap

4. Wash Basin

NOTES:

Wet “dirty” looking floor stain with shoes marks, etcDOES NOT contribute to smelly toilet rather it is unsightly and is a SAFETY concern of the users.

Fitting’s water seal prevents foul smell from the sanitary system entering the building. Vent pipe protects the water seal and helps maintain a STABLE discharge stack.

TRAP as described in BS55726.2 TrapsTraps should be designed so that deposits do not accumulate. A trap which is not an integral part of an appliances should be attached to, and be immediately beneath, its outlet and be self-cleansing. The internal surface of the trap should be smooth throughout. All traps should be accessible and provided with an adequate facility for cleansing. There can be advantages in providing traps which are capable of being readily removed or dismantle.

FLOOR TRAPS

Shown in the product catalogue CONVENTIONAL Floor Traps

Ground floor is it possible to have a water seal?

CLEANING EYES

Cleaning eye of water trap installed BELOW the floor level access to the cleaning eye by step ladder

Floor Traps

3. Floor TrapIdentify the sources of smell from the Floor Trap:

3.1 Accumulated organic materials/debris inside the water seal decaying emitting foul smell

3.2 Difficult or inaccessible areas within the Floor Trap ABOVE the water seal

3.3 Loss of Floor Trap water seal only to P-trap or S-trap

3.4 No water seal on the floor trap especially on the Ground Floor

3.5 Water seal dried up allowing foul smell to enter the building

FLOOR TRAP AT CORNER, WATER SEAL DRIES UP

Use Spind 6, discharge the basin water into the floor trap, hence water seal will not dry up.

Floor Trap without water seal

CONVENTIONAL FLOOR TRAP

How Does A Floor Trap Works?Spind 2 and Spind 6

How Does A Floor Trap Works?

1.0 Basin discharge BY PASS the water seal and goes directly to the stack. An advantage to discharge BELOW water seal!2.0 Ceiling height reduction 150mm verse 275 mm. Spind 6 preferred

How Does A Floor Trap Works?

VENT PIPE PROVISION1.0 Basin discharge on TOP of water seal entering from the side. An advantage to top up the water seal REGULARLY2.0 Ceiling height reduction 275mm verse 400mm. Spind 6 preferred

SPIND Mini

SPIND SF

Do you wish to MINIMIZE floor trap/gully piping below the floor slab, hence SPACE SAVING on the floor below

Achieve 0(zero)mm space for piping below – SPIND SF, condition – floor is wet often to refill the water seal!

SPIND SIDE FLOW

Water Seepage Concern? floor gully/trap is embedded in the floor

slab. Ribbed outer casing allows for water proof joint with concrete there is no chance of water seeping below.

Top Access Floor Trap WITHOUT water seal

WITHOUT water seal Insects enter the house via the floor trap especially

GROUND FLOOR

3. Floor Trap – SPIND Top Access TypeTop access type floor trap with bowl and bell cap with features as follows:

Easily removed and cleaned hence eliminate inaccessible stains build up within the floor trap.

Able to collect debris hence eliminating the debris to block the discharge stack

Cleaning eyes available to carry out rodding when there is a blockage

Water seal can be replenish automatically from the water basin water

Bowl bell cap components are easily available to replaced if lost

Side Flow for Concrete basin, water divert to urinal

4. Water BasinIdentify the sources of smell from the water basin

4.1 Accumulated organic materials/debris inside the water seal decaying emitting foul smell

4.2 Difficult or inaccessible areas within the water basin ABOVE the water seal

4.3 Loss of water seal, applicable to P-trap type only

4.4 No water seal, allowing smell from the sanitary system to enter the toilet

ConclusionNew Generation of Smelless public toilets can be built and are sustainable provided the key points are adhered to:

- Design (fittings are maintainable and easy of cleaning)

- Thinking out of the box is necessary and DO NOT follow the conventional method. More importantly use fittings that are easy to maintain and clean like SPIND Top Access Floor trap with cup and bowl features. This should be your specification in your tender document.

- Cleaning Schedules of the public toilets

- Simple wet mop with mild detergents follow by dry mop is sufficient!

- Education

- Users must be civic minded, treating the public toilets as if their own home toilets

NYLON 6 FITTINGS

LIST OF PLASTIC PRESSURE PIPES (Note: Internal Plumbing 3 to 4 bar system pressure)

UPVC – unplasticized polyvinylchloride ( length of 6 m)

CPVC – Chlorinated plasticized polyvinyl chloride

MuPVC – Modified unplasticized polyvinly chloride

ABS – Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene

HDPE – High density polyethylene (6m up to 100m length)

PPR - Polyproplyene

POB – Polypropylene Blend (classified as PP-B)

PE – RT, Polyethylene Raised Temperature

PE –X, Polyethylene cross-linked

PVDF – Polyvinylidenefluoride ( eg. PTFE, teflon)

Polybutylene – BS7291

JOINING METHOD OF PLASTIC PIPE Electrical Welding machine to heat up the pipe and socket and

press the soften components and hold, commonly known as poly fusion welding

Electrical Welding machine where both pipes are mounted on sliding blocks on the machine, electro fusion sockets installed and press start, machine takes over. Commonly known as Electro fusion welding

Solvent cement where both the socket and pipe has a coating of solvent cement, both pressed together and hold for joint to set

Mechanical join, use of compression ring and with mechanical force to tighten the nut forces the ring against the butt end of the fitting, creates a high pressure seal.

Polyfusion welding

Electrical Welding machine

Solvent cement

Electricity voltage supply from generator set at project site is unstable, this would affect the integrity of electro fusion joints, lesser impact on poly fusion joints

Solvent cement joints, dusty site condition would affect the integrity of the joint and there is a need to apply the correct amount of solvent cement on each of the joint. Some skill required.

Use of reel type of HDPE pipe up to 100 meter length would reduce the number of joints compared with solvent cement joint which is only 6 meter per length. More joints means a likelihood of a joint leak is higher!
