Welcome back aboard AHOY!

As the new editor-in-chief of this bulletin, I am looking forward to sailing through the ‘waters’, so to speak, with my fellow AHOY! crew.

This issue of AHOY! is the fi rst to appear under my editorship. The bulletin has had a strong reputation for publishing quality news and information revolving around the lives of the staff of UniKL MIMET. It is therefore incumbent on me to thank all of those people who have been instrumental in getting the bulletin to this point and keeping it there. The previous chief editors, Principal Specialist, En. Mazlan Muslim, as well as the editor before him, Assoc. Prof. Aminuddin Md. Arof, have helped to develop AHOY! into a prominent news bulletin for UniKL MIMET’s family. Creating an attractive piece of news bulletin is no easy feat, especially when its desired destination is to be a platform of the latest news and information. In order to succeed in this endeavour the bulletin and, by association, its editorial and graphics team need to produce quality articles. And for that, I would also like to specifi cally thank the editorial crew who have been instrumental in supporting both myself and Azizan, my assistant Chief Editor. The production of this issue of AHOY! could not have been materialised without your support.

This issue will cover the activities involving UniKL MIMET’s staff and students beginning January 2013 up till October 2013. Several new sections have been added to the bulletin to cater to the demands of both intellectual and general discourse. So, hop on board and enjoy the mental tour of information on AHOY! October-December 2013 issue.

BEST PRACTICESBEST PRACTICES FOR HYDRAULIC FLUID CLEANLINESS CONTROL

ArtikelILMIAH

Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahim

SpecialistTechnical Foudation Sect.

Introduction

The working fl uid is the single most important component of any hydraulic system. It serves as a lubricant, heat transfer medium, sealant and the most important of all a means of energy transfer. Use of a clean and high quality fl uid is an essential prerequisite for achieving effi cient operation of the hydraulic system. Oil contamination is a major source of component wear and equipment failure. Therefore, it is important that only clean fl uids are used in the equipment operation. Cleanliness-control centers ensure that the hydraulic fl uid is stored safely and is transferred in a contamination-free environment. The seven best practices for cleanliness control are presented below to avoid such contamination from occurring.

Correct Hydraulic Fluid Identifi cation

To ensure that the right fl uid is added to a piece of equipment, a labeling system is needed. This is driven by the fact that in large plants multiple types of fl uids are used. Hydraulic fl uids are complex chemical compositions and are often very incompatible, so to avoid errors of mixing fl uids, which may subject to contamination a good correct labeling system is necessary.

Use Fully Sealed and Contaminant Free Containers

Open and dirty containers can be a source of contamination entering the machine. No exception for dispensing containers and they must be safe, clean and closed. It also should be effi cient, easy to use and adapted to the applications being fi lled. Make sure the containers are well-sealed so no mistakes occur, regardless of who uses them.

Fitting Air Breathers

Contaminants such as air, particles and water can get into the containers easily if exposed to atmosphere upon usage. Fluid degradation may result due to contaminant ingress. Other problem arises are reduction in hydraulic system reliability and incurs removal process of the ingested contaminants. Hence it is important to fi t air breathers to all the containers.

Right Filter and Filtration System

The most common device installed in hydraulic systems to prevent foreign particles and contaminations from remaining in the system are referred to as fi lters. They may be located

Multicolored Dispensing Containers Fully

Sealed and Rust Free

Filter Arrangement

in the reservoir, in the return line, in the pressure line, or in any other location in the system where the designer of the system decides they are needed to safeguard the system against impurities. The right fi lter choice may ensure the fl uid cleanliness control is maintained throughout the operational period. Online and offl ine fi ltering systems are used to clean up the oil, while breathers or air conditioners are utilized to protect the fl uid.

Implement Oil Analysis

Analyzing the oil in an application is an important part of a lubrication strategy. By measuring against ISO 4406 standards, the oil can be kept at the right cleanliness levels. Additionally, chemical analysis of the oil will determine if it is fi t for further use.

Apply Cradle to Grave Concept

From the stage of make-up fl uid to disposal of hydraulic fl uid, cleanliness control should be applied and implemented in accordance to code of practice. If spills occur the fl uid can contaminate the environment. Right and correct procedures of handling hydraulic fl uid from the early stage until to waste oil produced should be adhered strictly to prevent from contaminant ingress and for dirty free fl uid.

Practical and Effi cient Lubricating Tool

Adding grease to a machine or hydraulic equipment accounts for the majority of lubricating jobs. Therefore, it is essential to have tools that are effi cient and practical. Grease guns should be color-coded to ensure that the right fl uid gets in the right application. Color-coded grease guns with different color for each type of grease can help in this regard.

Conclusion

Implementing best practices in cleanliness control of hydraulic fl uid over the long run is not an easy task. It requires the existing culture within a plant to be changed so the processes are accepted, followed and sustained. While cultures can be changed, to achieve this an understanding of the causes of failure and how to prevent these factors from coming into play during the implementation process are needed.

24th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2013), which was held from 9 - 11 May 2013, at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Kuala Lumpur. Their project which was entitled Orbital Clamping Unit for Friction Stir

Welding won a gold medal for the green technology (manufacturing process) category. This ITEX which is

organised annually by Malaysian Invention & Design Society (MINDS) attracts local and international inventors from more than 20 countries including Malaysia, Asia and Europe to present their latest

inventions and innovations. Those outstanding local and international inventors were awarded

accordingly and recognised internationally.

This orbital clamping unit (OCU) was used to support and hold the pipe pieces tightly together

during the friction stir welding (FSW) process. FSW is the solid state joining process which involves

mechanical contact (stirring process) to join either plates or pipes without producing fumes and arc

while eliminating the requirement of shielding gas and fi ller metal, thus saving weight and cost. As

FSW machine alone is very costly to acquire, and by having this OCU will enable any research and higher

learning institution to run their available CNC milling machine for FSW process to join pipe soundly (defect

free) at minimum expense. This is the fi rst product in Malaysia to enable FSW process for pipe joining,

especially for aluminium.

In our daily business, we use passwords to access personal email, login to the system (Ecitie) And Other Applications (Webmail, E-Learning) and many more. Some people may consider password as trivial and they take its importance for granted. One of the common problems among the user is forgetting the password. To avoid this from happening, most users will create a password that is similar with the things that they know like e-mail base, date of birth, lover’s name, mother’s maiden name, father’s name, car make and many others. Actually, in the eye of the hackers this may be one way for them to enter the computer easily without using any software to hack though. There are some tips on how to create an easy and secure password in future.

To create a password that is safe and easy to remember, follow these steps:

1. DO NOT USE PERSONAL 1. DO NOT USE PERSONAL

INFORMATION: INFORMATION:

Do not use personal information such as date of birth, pet name, lover’s name and so on. It is actually easier for others to guess your password especially your best friend.

2. DO NOT USE REAL WORDS: 2. DO NOT USE REAL WORDS:

Never use the correct words for example, “password”. You can replace it as “paxword” or “pappword”. This is because the hackers will detect the real word you used by using a special software.

3. COMBINE MISCELLANEOUS 3. COMBINE MISCELLANEOUS

CHARACTER : CHARACTER :

Use font, number or symbol to create your password. A good password is combined with various characters such

as “mo99$$is” or “Un1vers1t1”.

4. USE SIMPLIFIED SENTENCE AS USE SIMPLIFIED SENTENCE AS

WORDSWORDS:: You can also use this method. Take any verse that you like and then summarize as follows. “First Come First Served” summarize the password: “fcfs”

5. USE PASSWORD MANAGEMENT 5. USE PASSWORD MANAGEMENT

SOFWARE:SOFWARE:

There is a simple software that can manage your password. This software will help you create the best password which is easily retrievable. For example, the administrator password. Try downloading from www.download.com

6. USE A DIFFERENT PASSWORD: 6. USE A DIFFERENT PASSWORD:

Use a diff erent password to access any diff erent accounts. If someone knows your password then the entire account will be at risk from the carelessness.

7. SWITCH YOUR PASSWORD: 7. SWITCH YOUR PASSWORD:

Change your password every month or regularly. This will make it diffi cult for others to guess your password.

These are some methods that can be practised by all of you in creating passwords. It may seem trivial but if your password has been compromised, then the risk of leakage or thefts of information is extremely high. Hopefully the above steps can be applied not only for personal use but also for the department itself.

1. What you can control in your studies 1. What you can control in your studies 2. Best practices 2. Best practices

Before engaging in your studies, and concentrating,

try to center yourself with silence, clearing your mind

of distractions

that may disrupt your productivity.

What you can control in your studies:

• “Here I study”• “Here I study”Get a dedicated space, chair, table, lighting and

environment

Avoid your cellphone or telephone

Put up a sign to avoid being disturbed or interrupted

If you like music in the background, OK, but don’t let

it be a distraction.

(Research on productivity with music versus without

music is inconclusive)

• Stick to a routine• Stick to a routine, effi cient study

schedule.

Accommodate your day/nighttime energy levels

• Focus• FocusBefore you begin studying, take a few minutes

to summarize a few objectives, gather what

you will need, and think of a general strategy of

accomplishment

• Incentives• IncentivesCreate an incentive if necessary for successfully

completing a task,

such as calling a friend, a food treat, a walk, etc.

For special projects such as term papers, design

projects, long book reviews, set up a special incentive

• Change topics• Change topicsChanging the subject you study every one to two

hours for variety

How do you How do you concentrate concentrate

• Vary your study activities• Vary your study activitiesAlternate reading with more active learning exercises

If you have a lot of reading, try the SQ3R method

Ask yourself how you could increase your activity level while

studying? Perhaps a group will be best? Creating study

questions?

Ask your teacher for alternative strategies for learning. The

more active your learning, the better.

• Take regular, scheduled breaks that fi t you• Take regular, scheduled breaks that fi t youDo something diff erent from what you’ve been doing (e.g., walk

around if you’ve been sitting), and in a diff erent area

• Rewards• RewardsGive yourself a reward when you’ve completed a task

Best Practices:Best Practices:• You should notice improvementnotice improvement in a few days

But like any practice, there will be ups, levels, and downs:

• It will benefi t other activities you do!

Concentration refers to your ability to direct your thinking on the thing(s) you do at one particular time. The art or practice of concentration,no matter if studying biology or playing pool,is to focus on the task at hand and eliminate distraction We all have the ability to concentrate -- sometimes. Think of the times when you were “lost” in something you enjoy: a sport, playing music, a good game, a movie. Total concentration.

Studying abroadStudying abroad benefi ts UniKL studentsExploring the world beyond our borders creates unparalleled learning opportunities and outcomes. Travel exposes the person to feel the different cultures, languages and perspectives. Dedicating an autumn, a semester or a month to studying abroad deepens the benefi t, forging lifelong skills.Striving forward to MARA vision to produce global technopreneurs, this opportunity to UniKL students really gives them the enjoyment of this valuable experience through many foreign destinations. We have SPPL-IPMA, ISEM and Areas Erasmus Mundus which started in 2012.Most students who study overseas describe their time abroad as formative, changing their view of the world, building their confi dence and expanding their independence. For some, it is the fi rst time navigating public transportation, speaking a foreign language and eating unfamiliar cuisines. They can learn a lot just by taking a train trip from one country to another. How do I buy tickets if I don’t speak the language? Where can I exchange the currency? What do I do if the youth hostel is full? This is really a master class in problem solving.Studying abroad brings tangible rewards as well. A 2012 study in the journal of Applied Cognitive Psychology found that students who have lived and studied in foreign countries develop higher creative thinking skills. Developing advanced language skills, an expanded worldview, and cultural sensitivity make job applicants who have studied abroad more attractive to prospective employers. Usually, the most popular destinations were the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France and China being chosen.Students should target a destination and a program that fi ts their academic and personal interests. For some that may mean exploring the heritage and for others a country with future international business opportunities may be a better fi t. Whatever the motivation, researching the country and program is the critical fi rst step towards a positive and rewarding experience. We live in an increasingly interconnected, global world. Bringing diverse perspectives back to the unforeseen opportunities by MARA helps students who have studied abroad to be more marketable to future employers. I’ve seen fi rsthand the problem-solving, creative thinking and independence gained by our students. Begin your journey and embrace the world of opportunities available to you!

bertambah.
