COURSE OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:-

1. Use listening strategies in situations involving everyday work related communication

2. Interact in the context of realistic job-related situations by having discussions , giving and taking instructions and role play.

3. provide information and express ideas orally

4. develop skills in preparing and delivering oral presentations

5. manage and solve problems.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course helps students develop the skills needed to communicate effectively at the workplace with emphasis on reading strategies, analytical thinking, discussion and oral and written presentation.

English for Communication enables students to :

to learn English that is used in the workplace to develop existing skills and make them more specific

This course is principally based on communication and the development of speaking skill enabling the learner to use the language in various contexts and for various objectives. Cultural and intercultural aspects as well as the ability to learn independently are all integral parts of this course. This course is also to acquaint the student with elements of decision making and problem solving methods and techniques. Topics will include identifying and solving problem and methods to generate solutions.

1. Oral Communication Skills in the Workplace

Provide information and express ideas orally

1.1 Use appropriate language to report to superiors

1.2 Use appropriate language to communicate with colleagues

1.3 Use appropriate language to give instructions to subordinates

1.4 Use appropriate language to deal with stakeholders [ customers / suppliers ]

1. Use language for interpersonal purposes.

2. Ask questions and make statements with correct intonation, word stress and sentence rhythm.

3. Respond to questions politely by giving required information.

4. Share ideas, information and experiences on work-related topics.

2.0 Oral Presentation Skills

Develop skills in preparing and delivering formal oral presentations.

2.1 Identify purpose, research topics and develop content

2.2 Develop speaking skills to produce effective presentations for a range of situations.

2.3 Use appropriate non-verbal language in their presentations.

2.4 Design and develop presentations suitable for a range of situations.

2.5 Use appropriate and effective visual aids and/or technology to support presentations.

1. Select material and presentation style relevant to given task.

2. Practise and improve voice modulation, tone and volume to enhance meaning.

3. Speak with appropriate gestures, body language , stance and eye contact.

4. Use simple graphic organizers or i-think maps to assist organization of ideas.

5. Make use of simple visual prompts in presentations.
