    END OF QUESTION PAPER

  • At the moment, the most popular courses are Physiotherapy, Pharmacy and Medical Lab Technology.

What core areas are covered by the programmes? Are courses available at different levels (i.e. certificate through to degree what is the route)?MAHSA offer programmes in the certificates, diploma and degree levels. The general background of the programmes is science based. Students in all programmes learn areas in anatomy, physiology, pathology. Different programmes also carry individual subjects. For example students in Physiotherapy learn Musculoskeletal, Electrotherapy and Physiotherapy in Gerontology whereas students in Pharmacy learn things like Pharmaceutical Microbiology and so on.

A student after SPM has the decision of choosing to enter a diploma course directly or opt to do the A levels programme or an equivalent programme. A diploma programme in MAHSA is a 3 year course, followed by the student later completing their last 2 years of the degree programme in MAHSA depending on the course chosen.

How much emphasis is placed on theoretical knowledge and how much on practical skills?I would say we emphasize 60% on theory and 40% on clinical practical sessions. MAHSA emphasizes this in our Mission statement where it states we will be committed to the delivery of education of the highest quality with emphasis on hands on training and to produce competent and highly skilled healthcare professionals through qualified, dedicated and experienced teachers.

Can students complete the programme overseas or is it possible to take everything in Malaysia? The diploma and degree programmes at MAHSA are fully conducted in Malaysia. We are offering the students the chance to do an international degree at a lower rate than studying abroad. However, we do have plans to promote overseas options in time to come.

Other thoughts? At MAHSA we welcome anyone with the heart and wish to pursue a career in the Allied Health Science sector. The statistics show that the country will need more than 54,000 allied health science professionals by the year 2020. There is a market for those with skills and knowledge so I would advise you not to miss the chance of a lifetime experience. For those interested in furthering your education with us at MAHSA, please feel free to contact our marketing staff at +603-2092 9999 or 130088 0300.

    Realising your Dreamsas allied

    Health Sciences Professionals

Pursuing a career in Allied Health Science is becoming a choice among students. From a lab technologist to a fully trained physiotherapist, the opportunities are wide. Mr. Rafeeudeen Mohamed, Registrar of

MAHSA College talks about the careers in Allied Health Science.

What are the career options in the field of Allied Health Sciences? What are the prospects? There are many options in the field of Allied Health Sciences. Here at MAHSA we offer Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Medical Lab Technology, Medical Imaging (Radiography) and Environmental Health. Students will be fully trained to later pursue a career following their graduation of any of the MAHSA degree or diploma programmes. This will enable them to work in any private or government hospitals or health institutions.

What advice would you give to prospective students who are thinking about careers in Allied Health Sciences? For a student sitting for SPM, how well should he/she do to enrol in this course? Go for it! The demand for Allied Health professionals in the health care industry is high and rising not just locally but on an international scale. The chances of employment are high mixed with the opportunities to travel to various countries and undergo various working experiences. The minimum requirements at MAHSA for any of our Diploma courses are 3 credits in SPM including one science subject. This excludes the Diploma in Dental Technology which requires 5 credits in SPM.

What qualities do students need in order to succeed in the field of Allied Health Sciences? Are generic or specialist skills needed? The basic qualities required by an individual choosing any Allied Health Science profession is determination to succeed, be caring and helpful, good natured and hard working. The hours are long and taxing; so an individual should be mild tempered and able to deal with emotionally stressed patients in a smiling and polite manner at all times. The most prized skill an individual should have in any profession is the ability to provide helpful communication and assistance to another person when in need.

What are currently the most popular allied health science courses among Malaysian students?

    SECTION C(25 marks)

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

Batik Art, a medium using a wax dyeing on cloth has now been internationally acclaimed as a unique and new type of media. It has been regarded as the National Art of Malaysia.

The origins of Batik is by no means new. In fact, it is believed to have originated from India and introduced to China during the Tang Dynasty (618-905 AD). There is yet another claim that it originated from Java, in a process which the Javanese used in making their colourful batik sarongs. It reached its highest form in Java, where the craft has been a cottage industry since the 7th century. Nevertheless all these theories are yet to be proven.

This age-old medium was introduced to the Malay Archipelago from Java and has been developed into fine art by Malaysian artists. While Batik art is mainly used for the manufacture of apparel in Indonesia, in Malaysia it is used for both materials and Batik paintings.

The technique of Batik is far from simple one. In fact, it is a long and painstaking process.

The first step in Batik as done by an artist is to give the cotton cloth a thorough washing in order to remove all the starch. The cloth is then dried, ironed and stretched taut on a wooden frame.

The second step is to make a rough charcoal sketch as a guide for the painting. The design develops later with each waxing.

The third process is the application of the wax, which is used only as a protective agent in the dyeing process. The wax (usually a mixture of paraffin, resin and yellow beeswax) is melted and handled by means of the Tjanting, a brass pen-shaped like small cup with single or double spout. The artist paints with the pen in a negative way by covering up places where he does not want the colour to appear. The process is exacting and tedious and does not allow for errors, only, artistic mistakes.

Like the lithographer, the Batik artist must repeat the process of the first step after each colouring. Only this time the artist will wash the waxed piece in boiling water.

The cycle of wax removing and wax covering for additional colours will continue until the artist considers his work completed.

The fourth stage is to apply colours or dyes to the painting. These can be painted on with a brush or, in the case of very large areas, the cloth can be removed from the frame and dipped or immersed in a basin of dye.

The final stage is the removal of wax residue and the fixing of colours, dipping the cloth into boiling water to which a small amount of detergent is added and then rinsing the cloth in cold water. The finished painting is then dipped in a diluted solution of sulphuric acid to fix the colours permanently.

The most noticeable feature of batik painting is the crackle, line and dots. Batik painting can be framed or scrolled.

The Minister of Public Instruction and Madame Georges Romponneau request the honour of M. and Madame Loisels company at the place of the Ministry on Monday evening, January 18th. Instead of being delighted, as her husband had hoped, she threw the invitation on the table crossly, muttering, What do you wish me to do with that? Why my dear, I thought you would be glad. You never go out and this is such a fine opportunity. I had great trouble to get it. Everyone wants to go; it is very select, and they are not giving many invitations to clerks. The whole official world will be there. She looked at him with irritated glance and said impatiently, and what do you wish me to put on my back? He had not thought of that. He stammered, Why, the gown you go to the theatre in. It looks very well to me. He stopped, distracted, seeing that his wife was weeping. Two great tears ran slowly from the corners of her eyes towards the corner of her mouth. Whats the matter? Whats the matter? he asked. By a violent effort she conquered her grief and replied in a calm voice, while she wiped away her tears, Nothing. Only I have no gown and, therefore, I cant go to this ball. Give your card to some colleague whose wife is better equipped than I am.

Question 34The following are the novels studied in the literature component of the English Language.

Choose any one of the novels above and answer the question below.

Sometimes people can be unkind to other people. Describe an incident that typifies this in the novel you have studied. What lesson did you learn from this incident?

Jungle of Hope - Keris MasThe Pearl - John SteinbackThe Return - K.S. Maniam

    [15 marks]

  • Be a Winning LawyerOne needs to be disciplined, have the passion and good English language

skills. These are attributes which you would require if you are thinking of a legal career. Besides taking up law studies provides many openings to one.Times Guides spoke to Mr Jothi Ram, the Academic Director of

Brickfields Asia College for an insight into the profession.

What are the career options in the field of Law?There are many. When they become qualified persons, as we term it, they can either set up their own practice or work in a law firm.

Some might not like the idea of going to court. So they can instead, opt to be employed in organisations as Legal Advisors, Human Resources Managers, and in managerial positions in multinational corporations.

With a law degree, some of them even take up the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) qualifications and become Company Secretaries or heads of corporate divisions in companies.

What advice would you give to prospective students who are thinking about careers in Law? Especially SPM students.Firstly they should be disciplined. Studying for a law degree is demanding and requires a certain amount of self-discipline. One has to read and understand the principles of law and about the cases decided.

Students have to be proactive, look up reports, do research, and read up on judgments on their own.

One must think carefully whether it is the kind of job they want to do. Practising as a lawyer, they have to handle peoples problems and they have to have a knack for helping people. Also, one has to be able to apply what he or she studied in his work.

Students, sitting for SPM, basically have to cultivate a good reading

habit and have a good command of the English language.

A good understanding of the language is essential and they must be able to understand and rationalise with the judgements delivered and decisions made.

Form Five students should make an effort to improve their language skills, read articles in Readers Digest, for example. The articles are short and this is one way to develop the language skills, by learning and understanding how the language is used.

What qualities do students need to succeed in the field of Law? Generally, students need to be disciplined, have an analytical mind that questions everything and communicate clearly. The specialist set of skills are usually developed as they go along.

What are the most popular specialisations in Law?The basic general law degree does not have a specialisation. But there are post-graduate studies, one can take up when he wants to specialise in an area.

The most popular specialisation is Masters in Company Corporate Law, Intellectual Property Law and Medical Law.

What core areas are covered by a first degree?A basic first degree has six core subjects and six optional subjects. The six cores include Law of Contract, Law of Torts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Land Law and Laws of Trusts. These are the vital for one to know the operations of law. Six others are optional.

Usually, a student needs to get the first degree, and then move on to take up post graduate studies.

However, the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) is a Bar Exams to enter the profession. Most countries distinguish an academic qualification which is a general degree with a qualification to go into practice.

How much emphasis is placed on theoretical knowledge and practical skills? What one learns is theoretical knowledge while the practical skills come into place when one goes for chambering for nine months.

Before being called to the Bar, chambering pupils learn how to file a case, prepare sales and purchase agreements and other general agreements, among others. It is during this time they learn the practical aspects of law.

Can students complete the programme overseas or is it possible to take everything in Malaysia? The LLB Hons (University of London External Programme) is a 3 + 0 programme. This is a prestigious qualification and is the only British degree recognised for the CLP that can be completed entirely in Malaysia.

Then there is also a twinning programme, the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE) LLB. The UWE LLB degree is a prestigious qualification and students can transfer into the final year of this LLB programme at UWE upon completion of two years at Brickfields Asia College. The UWE LLB is recognised for the CLP Examination. The Bachelor of Jurisprudence is an external law degree programme offered by the University of Malaya. The programme is recognised for the purpose of entry into the CLP programme for those intending to practice law in Malaysia. This can be completed between three (minimum) and seven years (maximum) locally.

    The Pearl

One of the incidents in The Pearl by John Steinback which I considered unkind is the doctors action of turning away the sick Coyotito. Of all the characters, the one that I dislike most is the doctor due to his unethical behaviour. When Coyotito was stung by the scorpion, his parents took him to the doctor but the doctor refused to give the treatment to him. He only treats those who can afford and demands to see the money before he treats anyone. He is greedy and discontent. I feel that both his relative wealth and weight come from his continuous oppression of the people. He even thinks of the Indians as animals. Referring to Kinos request for the treatment, he says, Im a doctor, not a veterinary. His attitude is the opposite of good doctors who are supposed to treat everybody equally. However, when he discovers that Kino own the great pearl, he smugly announces to the villagers that Kino is one of the patients. Anotherincidentthatshowsthecrueltyofthedoctoriswhenhefindsoutthatthebabyisgetting better and his service is no longer needed, he gives the baby a white powder which later turns out to be poison. From my point of view, I feel that the doctors actions are bad and immoral. He is the embodiment of evil and corruption in the society.
