ORANG-UTANS

Orang-utans are found only in Borneo and Sumatra in South-East Asia. They

have long reddish brown fur and belong to the ape family. Orang-utans can grow to a

height of 1.5 metres and weigh up to 100 kilograms.

Their hands are long. This is probably because of the swinging they do from treeto tree. The orang-utans usually move by swinging from one branch to another; this is

called brachiating. Their hands look just like ours, with four fingers and a thumb. They

are the largest tree-dwelling mammals in the world.

The word orang-utan means jungle man or man of the forest. Orang-utans

are omnivores. They eat mainly insects, small birds, shoots and fruits. They like honey

too. They are mammals. They give birth to live young and feed their young milk.

Orang-utans are decreasing in numbers because their habitats are being

destroyed. The biggest threat to them is man, who exploits their habitats and stealsyoung orang-utans to sell them as pets.
